Merredin farmers rally to help grieving family after death of Jordan Lynch

“If this doesn’t restore your faith in humanity, nothing will”. The words are those of a grieving wife, still raw with the pain of the sudden loss her husband, the father of their two children, but somehow finding solace in the incredible spirit of the bush in her darkest days. They were posted by Dana Mulvany on social media yesterday along with photos of her and the kids by the roadside, holding a cardboard sign with “thank you” written in permanent marker — a sentiment directed to the tight-knit farming community of Merredin which has rallied around her. Ms Mulvany’s husband Jordan Lynch, 35, fell to his death while building a shed at the family farm at Nangeenan, 11km west of Merredin and 250km east of Perth, on Sunday morning. His 68-year-old father Peter Lynch was seriously injured when the pair toppled eight metres from a telehandler — a lifting machine that’s a cross between a crane and a forklift. A St John Ambulance spokeswoman said both men were rushed to Merredin District Hospital in a critical condition before being flown to Royal Perth Hospital, where Jordan died. Peter was still in hospital yesterday in a stable condition. Jordan was a pillar of the Merredin community and was well known for his love of farming, his family and travelling. Pictures posted to his wife’s Facebook page show the couple travelling the world together, including for their wedding in New Zealand in 2015 and travelling to the Taj Mahal in India. The tragedy has deeply touched the Merredin farming community which has thrown its arms around Ms Mulvany and her family. Dozens of farmers have driven their machinery to the Lynch’s property to bale their large hay program. Merredin Police shared a video to Facebook showing more than five giant tractors and hay rakes travelling along a rural road on the way to the family’s property on Thursday, with police vehicles doing traffic control to help the ensemble. “When tragedy strikes, our amazing community comes together to support,” they wrote. Plans are in place for local farmers to help the family harvest their crop in coming weeks. Grain handler CBH said it would make the delivery of the Lynch family's crop as easy as possible, with potential to open the Merredin grain receival site for exclusive use. Through her grief, Ms Mulvany posted her thanks on Facebook, remarking on the community’s show in support of her husband and how it had buoyed her. “One of the most incredible experiences of my life. Jordan Lynch my love you’re so incredibly loved,” she wrote. She described her husband as “the love of my life” and “our absolute world”. “He was the most beautiful soul, (he) will be so indescribably missed,” she wrote. “He truly blossomed when he became a father and there could not have been a better papa in the world.” Ms Mulvany thanked the Merredin community for their support and prayers. “Pray for his dad Peter that he has a speedy recovery and that he copes with Jords passing ... and for our beautiful kids,” she said. “If you have any memories about Jord you want to share that would be lovely as I hope to compile something for the kids to read when they are older so they can get a better picture of who their papa was. “Lastly hold close those you love. Tell them you love them, cherish the now, spend time together as a family. We used to often say how blessed we were so my hope from all of this is that those who knew Jord will be able to count their blessings too and carrying (sic) on this legacy.” Known as a fun-loving larrikin, Mr Lynch made headlines in 2015 after a video of him “skurfing” in a creek on his farm went viral. The footage, taken after his farm copped a 60mm drenching, showed Mr Lynch being riding a surfboard along the swollen creek while being towed by a quad bike. WorkSafe is investigating the fatal accident. A spokeswoman would not confirm how the pair fell or whether the machine had collapsed, saying this was a matter for the investigation.
