Predator go-kart coach Thomas Sparkes allowed to stay in sport despite asking 14-year-old girl for photos

A self-confessed “predator” go-kart racing coach caught out asking a 14-year-old girl for “cheeky” photos has been allowed by the sport’s governing body to continue mixing with minors at events — including at overnight camps. Prominent karting driver Thomas Sparkes met his victim through Karting WA race meets, where he would interact with young children from across the State. Mr Sparkes, aged 22 at the time, was a trusted freelance coach to a young male driver and would often aid other children at the track with karting tips and techniques, as well as offering mechanical help on the karts. Between November and December 2020, he struck up late-night conversations with the girl via Snapchat, asking her to send him explicit images. The girl’s father confronted Mr Sparkes after he discovered the messages and subsequently lodged a complaint with Karting WA and Karting Australia. After several months, he received a final email from Karting WA saying his complaint would not progress any further and the organisation would “not be taking any further action on the matter”. He said he expected better from the organisation and was “shocked and appalled” by their lack of concern. The father, who does not want to be named to protect his daughter’s identity, said it was “every parent’s worst nightmare” to discover their child being “groomed” by “someone they trusted”. “I was shocked, devastated, angry, frustrated that Thomas did this to my daughter,” he said. In one 2am exchange, seen by The West Australian, Mr Sparkes sent the man’s 14-year-old daughter a photo of himself almost exposing his genitals and asked for one in return. The victim can be seen making repeated deflections against Mr Sparkes’ desperate attempts for the illegal photo, throughout the conversation that took place on December 13. “Did ya (sic) fix the tan lines?” asked Mr Sparkes in the conversation. “No. Why can’t you forget about that already,” the 14-year-old victim replied. Mr Sparkes then repeatedly asks the young girl to “prove it” and show him the tan lines in a photo. The victim then receives a “cheeky” photo of Mr Sparkes, onto which she replies with “woah, how much alcohol have you had”. Mr Sparkes says over message that the photo was “almost cheeky” and that he had a lot of alcohol that night. The victim made multiple excuses to deflect his requests of a “hoe snap” in return, and says her Snapchat is “broken” and won’t let her send images. Mr Sparkes then replies with “it’s not like you have sent anything remotely in your life anyway.” “Well not to me anyway,” he adds over Snapchat. The victim asks why Mr Sparkes would want these explicit images of herself, and he replies with “I mean, I wouldn’t complain.” At this point in the conversation, the victim once again discloses her age, stating she is 14. Undeterred, Mr Sparkes asks the victim what her “hoe snaps” would be, and further presses for an explicit image. He says he is “waiting” and will Facetime the victim if she doesn’t send an image soon. He also asks if her Instagram works to send an image over. The victim said she is meant to be asleep as it is 2am, and “can’t leave a light on or talk too loud” with fears she will wake her parents. Mr Sparkes replies with “I ain’t talking don’t worry (sic).” The messages were discovered by the girl’s father on January 2, 2021, where he then video recorded the Snapchat conversation — which he admits took multiple attempts because he was “shaking with anger.” The father confronted Mr Sparkes via Facebook on March 28, during which the 23-year-old admitted he had been a predator and had “fixed himself 100 per cent”. “The matter has been dealt with from my side,” Mr Sparkes said in the message. “I have fixed myself 100 per cent. I have no contact with underage people and am not a “predator” from (sic) at least four months. “The measure have already been taken by myself (sic),” he wrote. The father sent multiple emails to both Karting WA and Karting Australia, requesting someone from the organisations look at the irrefutable video evidence that supports his claim. However, his requests were continually ignored. After several months, the father received a final email from Karting WA on June 21 stating that his claim would not progress any further. “As this matter has already been placed in the hands of the Western Australian Police and they have seemingly decided not to take any action, presumably because there is insufficient evidence to sustain a charge, Karting WA will not be taking any further action on this matter,” the email read. The father said he did not want to go further with a police investigation and put his daughter through that “traumatic experience” and “embarrassment”. “She has already been through enough with this. I don’t want to drag her through the system and humiliate her further,” he said. “She is only 15-years-old.” He admits he expected better from Karting WA. “I basically expected something to happen but it didn’t. And I made the CEO aware that I had video evidence to support the complaint, at which time he said ‘I don’t think I should have them, and I don’t want to have them because there is potentially a conflict of interest’.” “We both agreed that it was common ground they have the ability and the power, as well as the rules and regulations, to deal with this matter,” he said. “But he said they need to tread very cautiously with the complaint, and to make sure they were well grounded with evidence and lawyers before they did anything to Thomas. “I said I agree to all of that, but why can’t you suspend Thomas’ now while the investigation takes place. “I expected them to take the cautious approach, because if you look at the lessons coming out of Swimming Australia and gymnastics. Because where there is risk — especially to children — they should not wait, they should act. The West Australian spoke to Mr Sparkes who said the incident happened “six to 12 months ago” and declined to comment any further on the matter. Karting WA said the matter has been handled “in accordance with our member protection policy.” “Which requires that such matters be handled with a high degree of sensitivity and confidentiality,” they said in a statement. “As such it would be inappropriate for us to provide any further commentary.” Mr Sparkes has been actively involved in karting meets and races since the complaints came forward. He was last at the “Dash for Cash” race in Kalgoorlie, an overnight meet, just weeks ago on November 13 and 14.
