Silo goes, fences and trees felled

Tenterden farmer Scott Reynolds and his family were settling into a Sunday afternoon catch-up with friends when the destructive winds hit their farm.

From the front patio, the group watched as trees fell to the ground up the driveway and across paddocks.

A drive around the farm after the storm revealed the extent of the damage - trees were across fences and debris was everywhere over the farm.

A silo bolted to a cement pad broke loose and crushed an auger in its path, an illustration of the strength of the wind.

On Monday, Mr Reynolds was still evaluating the damage bill.

"There is going to be a lot of time spent fixing fences," he said.

The damage comes just three weeks after a destructive hail storm of ice the size of golf balls hit the farm and others nearby.

Mr Reynolds said that during the hail storm a patio at the home was destroyed and two cars were badly dented.

At the time, he had just finished putting in the first paddock of canola.

"The hail just levelled the paddock so there were no furrows," he said.

His canola, which was pushed about 5cm into the ground, has germinated.
