WA’s most popular boys’ and girls’ baby names for 2020 revealed
When it came to naming their first child, Isla ticked all the boxes for Melville parents Holly and Justin Russell.
“It’s short, it’s sweet, and you can’t shorten it to a nickname. We love it,” Mrs Russell said.
They aren’t alone, with Isla topping the list of WA’s most popular girl baby names in 2020, moving up one spot from 2019.
Classic names were popular with WA parents last year, with Olivia, Mia, Charlotte and Ava rounding out the top five girls’ names, followed by Amelia, Grace, Ella, Matilda and Isabella. Matilda shot up from 17th last year to break into the top ten.
Results compiled by the Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages, to be released today, found that Oliver was the most chosen name for boys in 2020 for the sixth time in the past seven years, after slipping to third in 2019.
Noah retained second place, while perennial favourite Jack dropped to third from first.
Elijah debuted in the top ten for boys, with Kai (35th) and Bodhi (50) among the more unusual boys’ names. Mackenzie, Aaliyah, Quinn and Frankie were among the top girls’ names.
Two names made it on to both lists, with Riley coming in at 33 on the boys’ list and 48 on the girls’ list and Charlie the fifth most popular boys’ name and 44th girls’ name.
