Perth shivered through its coldest day of the year this morning, with the mercury dipping to a frosty 3.8C.

And many of us felt the chill, with the minimum being hit just after 7am and staying there until 7.35am.

But if you thought that was cold, spare a thought for residents in Jandakot where clear skies resulted in an overnight low of just 2C.

However, it was still not as cold as the Wheatbelt town of Wandering, which woke to an icy -1.4C.

Weather Bureau forecaster Catherine Shelfhout told The West Live this morning that the cold weather was felt throughout much of the lower part of the State.

“It was pretty chilly this morning — the coldest one so far this year,” she said.

“And once you go further south, Jarrahdale was below zero and Wandering was the coldest in the State with -1.4C.”

Ms Shelfhout said the frigid conditions were set to stay through the weekend and beyond.

“We will certainly get similar temperatures tonight,” she said.

“We’ve got a ridge over us, so really light winds and clear skies just allows the heat to radiate away overnight.

“But then a big change coming Saturday night into Sunday morning, we’ve got a cold front coming through so there will be a fair bit of rain on Sunday.

“Behind that cold front ... some really cold air coming through on Monday, so still a chance of more showers.

“Probably some small hail and just cold and windy conditions. Going for a top 14c on Monday.”

In Perth, the maximum temperature today and tomorrow is tipped to reach 19C before the cold front wraps its mitts around Perth and the South West, bringing up to 25mm of rain and a top of only 16C on Sunday.

“It’s a fairly significant cold outbreak, in behind the cold front that comes through on Sunday,” Weather Bureau duty forecaster Peter Clegg said.

“In terms of temperatures, they’ll be lower than normal.”

After a chilly 14C on Monday, it should hit 16C in Perth on Tuesday, with an expected top of 17C on Wednesday.

But those temperatures sound positively balmy compared to the 11C forecast for Katanning on Monday and 12C in Bridgetown.

Busselton is expecting a top of 13C on Monday.
