Perth has woken to an exceptionally chilly morning as temperatures plunged below the early August average to near freezing.

It felt as cold as 1.1C around 7am on Tuesday but really it was 2.7C, according to the Bureau of Meteorology — much colder than the 3C forecast many Perth locals planned for .

Residents shivered through the morning as frost lingered across the city and out to the hills, with some residents reporting the extra crisp temperature leaving a light coat of ice on their car.

Ellenbrook and Gingin are forecast to get the coldest on Tuesday with 2C expected for both areas.

Suburbs in Perth’s east including Armadale, Midland and Kalamunda were forecast to reach a low 3C, while coastal suburbs like Scarborough, Fremantle and Swanbourne were expected to dip to 6C.

The August minimum temperatures for Perth usually reach lows between 4C and 9C, making Tuesday’s dip particularly unusual.

Once the chill clears, Perth will have some cloud and light wind which will ease in the late afternoon, with Tuesday bringing a top temperature of 17C.

The blistering morning comes after a wet and wild weekend in Perth, which had everything from hail, heavy rain and strong wind.

There was little reprieve on Monday as thunder wreaked havoc and storms lingered throughout the day.

Wednesday is set to begin with fog before conditions clear.

The rest of the week is forecast to be sunny, with Sunday predicted to close the week out with a toasty high of 25C.
