Woman’s hair ‘embedded in kerb’ after being dragged hundreds of metres in teen’s violent carjacking

A teenager dragged a woman for hundreds of metres in a violent carjacking, leaving the victim’s hair “embedded” into the kerb when she hit her head, a court has been told. Graphic footage of Theo Fewquandie’s cowardly act in the middle of a Brisbane carpark was played to the court as the young man faced Brisbane District Court. The woman hangs out of the door as Fewquandie, then 18, speeds off in her car, driving over speed bumps and mounting the kerb as members of the public desperately try to stop him. She would have died from her injuries without hospital intervention, the court was told. A stony-faced Fewquandie on Thursday pleaded guilty to a single count of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing grievous bodily harm. He also pleaded guilty to charges of serious assault, unlawful entry of a motor vehicle, unlicensed driving and failing to appear. Crown prosecutor Cameron Wilkins said the female victim was waiting in a car parked outside a shopping centre in Woolloongabba on January 11, 2021, when Fewquandie entered the car. Mr Wilkins said she became trapped partly underneath the car as she tried to get out because of her seatbelt He said Fewquandie began driving off with the woman still hanging out the door. “She was screaming as she was being dragged along and under the car but not under the wheels,” Mr Wilkins said. Nearby police began pursuing Fewquandie as he drove on the wrong side of the road, mounting the kerb. The victim hit that kerb, leaving her hair “embedded” in the path. Mr Wilkins said Fewquandie’s conduct only ended after he hit a wall before fleeing. Before his arrest, Fewquandie told a member of the public: “I just had an accident, I don’t know if she’s hurt.” Mr Wilkins said the woman spent 16 days in hospital and underwent four surgeries. She sustained full thickness burns to a large portion of her body, lacerations to her head and body and fractures to her foot and toes. Without hospital treatment, she would have died from her burns, Mr Wilkins said. “I wish I could have escaped the trauma of it all and pursued my dreams … beginning a good career and staying in Australia,” he read from the woman’s impact statement. “I have lost this dream, I have lost who I used to be. “Rather, I have disfiguring scars that will always be there, that remind me every single moment of every single day of what happened.” The court was told earlier that morning, Fewquandie was in hospital on an emergency examination order when he tried to leave the ward. When stopped by security he said “f--k off you dog c--ts” and began struggling with the guards. Mr Wilkins said Fewquandie then spat in the eyes of one of the hospital guards. Defence barrister Dominic Nguyen said his client had injected the drug ice before being taken to hospital on the examination order. Mr Nguyen said Fewquandie was still drug affected during the carjacking. Proceedings were adjourned after the court was told further hospital material related to Fewquandie’s emergency order at hospital was required. Fewquandie, who remains in custody on remand, will return to court on July 7.
