A man is facing attempted murder charges after he allegedly tried to open a plane’s emergency exit door 30,000 feet in the air.

The man was travelling from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, to Kochi, India on Batik Air flight OD231 on August 7 when the incident took place.

During the flight, the 36-year-old allegedly attempted to open the plane’s emergency exit door, damaged its windows, and threatened other passengers.

“The incident took place mid-air between 9.30 pm and 11 pm,” police said, as reported by the Indian Express.

“Without any provocation, he tried to open the emergency exit and destroyed the exit window panel.

“He threatened the co-passengers and the crew, who tried to prevent him.

“Later, he was overpowered by the co-passengers and the crew.”

The plane was at 30,000 feet when the terrifying incident took place, according to GB News.

In footage of the aftermath shared on social media, windows appear to be significantly scratched, and part of the plane’s plastic interior looks broken.

Passengers attempt to intervene and stop the man, who is later seen restrained by zip ties.

Police said there was nothing to provoke the man and his mental health would be assessed.

“He said he felt like doing so at that moment,” police said.

“It was not like he had lost his job (and was frustrated on this account).”

When the flight touched down in India, the man was arrested on charges of criminal intimidation, failing to follow official safety directions, and risking public safety.

Since then, police have added an attempted murder charge to the list.

“As the act of the accused could have endangered the lives of the co-passengers, we have evoked an attempt to murder charge against him,” police said, as published by the Deccan Chronicle.

“He has to be questioned in detail as part of the probe.”

Cabin crew and passengers are being interviewed as part of the investigation.

It is understood the man had been living in Malaysia for the past 10 years for work and was travelling home to India to see his newborn child.
