Costa Blanca drowning: Ukrainian couple die at beach off popular Spanish holiday hotspot

VideoAustralia recorded 313 drowning deaths in 2026, a decrease from the previous year's record high but still significantly above the decade average.

A tourist couple have been confirmed dead after being pulled from the water at a popular seaside tourist hotspot.

It’s understood the Ukrainian nationals were swimming at one of the beaches at Costa Blanca, a popular coastal region in Spain’s south when tragedy struck.

Onlookers reported that the boyfriend, aged 25, entered the water on Saturday with another man after seeing his girlfriend, also aged 25, and another woman get into trouble in the waves.

While one of the men managed to save his partner, it’s understood that the couple both drowned.

The identity of the pair has not been released to the public but local Mayor Jose Luis Saex confirmed that they were Ukrainians who had travelled to the region to see friends who lived there.

Spain’s southern Alicante region, home to Costa Blanca, is extremely popular with UK and European tourists, but is also regarded as a treacherous swimming location.

Safety data from local groups reveal that roughly 47 people lose their lives to drowning in the 200-kilometre coastal province each year.

Alicante endured one of its worst summers in 2025, when eight people drowned in its waters in the first seven days of June that year, according to The Sun.
