Most Australian families have come from somewhere else.

A nation of migrants, we are bonded by our belief in a fair go and the right to wear thongs as formal wear.

Our journeys are varied but many have overcome the tyranny of distance and war to call Australia home.

From making it out of sprawling refugee camps or being a prisoner of war to surviving shipwrecks and pretending to be a boy to avoid the Taliban — all roads leading to Australia are different.

For others, like Noongar elder Walter McGuire, the journey was not as arduous and migration poses a much more complicated issue.

Read and watch this seven part series, where Lily Hoffmann uncovers your history, in all of our stories.
