Joe Spagnolo: Election race starter’s gun won’t be fired until interest rates go down

As far as Saturday’s go, yesterday probably wasn’t on your radar as being anything significant, unless it was your wedding anniversary, birthday or your favourite AFL team was playing. That is unless you are a political nerd. Because yesterday was the first Saturday that a Federal election could have been held. Yes, we are now officially in election season. This means Anthony Albanese can go to the polls any time between now and May next year. And if you want further proof that an election is in the air, you only need to look at the fact Federal Liberal leader Peter Dutton chose to fly into Perth for a five-day visit after a trip to Israel, where he met Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Remember when WA didn’t matter in Federal elections? I do. In years gone by would a Federal leader have spent five days in WA straight after visiting Israel? Not. On. Your. Life. In the old days the election result was declared in the east, just as polls were closing in WA. But things have changed. Albanese needed WA to form a majority government in 2022 and will now need WA if he has any hope of retaining power. Dutton, if he is any chance of beating Albanese — and has any hope of retaining the leadership after the next poll — needs to win back seats Labor took off the Liberals at the last election. Tangney, Swan, Hasluck and Pearce — and Curtin, which the Teals won in 2022 — are in Dutton’s sights. That’s why he visited Curtin and Tangney during his WA stopover, along with a winery in the Swan Valley. As I wrote a few weeks back, the money is still on Albanese calling an election for late November, or first week in December. King Charles confirming a royal visit to Australia in October and a Queensland election rule that month out. But one thing is for certain: Albanese will not call an election until he thinks the economic narrative is in his favour. That’s why Tuesday is also a significant day, because on Tuesday RBA boss Michele Bullock will make a call on interest rates. The fact the Australian Bureau of Statistics on Wednesday reported the nation’s inflation rate had increased from 3.6 per cent to 3.8 per cent means interest rates are probably going to stay where they are. It is seen as the best way to get closer to the RBA’s cash rate “sweet spot” of between 2 and 3 per cent. But it is now highly unlikely interest rates will go down on Tuesday. And what that means is Albanese and his Treasurer Jim Chalmers still won’t be able to start making any claims that the dark days are over. It means they’ll wait until Bullock announces a rate cut before they seriously consider putting their finger on the election button. Since March 2022 there have been 13 interest rate hikes in Australia. The political landscape has changed dramatically since Albo beat Scott Morrison and became PM. When Albo was elected in 2022, a homeowner with a $538,000 mortgage on a fixed rate of about 2 per cent was repaying $1926 a month. That same loan, on a variable rate of 6.3 per cent, would now cost that homeowner $3361 a month — an increase of more than $1400. What’s interesting here in WA is that many of the seats Albanese needs to hang on to power have significant numbers of battlers — Pearce among them. Swan and Hasluck would also have a significant number of families with big mortgages — and now big loan repayments. How will Albanese convince those WA homeowners to vote for him again if interest rates show no signs of going down? Albanese needs a good news story for mortgage battlers also struggling with huge cost-of-living increases, including groceries and petrol. We may well now be in Federal election season. But it’s highly unlikely the starter’s gun trigger will be pulled until interest rates go down.
