Behind the White Line: Expert says cocaine-users have ‘blood on their hands’ with cartel trade out of control

One of the world’s leading narcotics trafficking experts wants recreational Australian drug users to realise “they have blood on their hands”, with our surging consumption helping fuel violence and corruption in producer and transit countries. Annette Idler, associate professor in global security at Oxford University in the United Kingdom, said it was important for social drug users in western countries to understand all the different parts of the supply chain to get a drug like cocaine into Australia. Dr Idler told the Behind The White Line podcast consumers who viewed cocaine as part of a fun Friday night out might change their habits if they knew more about the murder, rape and corruption associated with the crime networks that want to control supply and distribution. “I had a conversation with someone who claimed that the cocaine that is being used is just fair trade cocaine. I mean, that gives an example of how disconnected from reality people are,” she said. Dr Idler’s reference to “fair trade” cocaine concerns the use of social media by crime gangs and dealers to convince buyers their cocaine is ethically sourced. The marketing tactic is also referred to as “woke coke”. She said there is no such thing as ethically sourced cocaine. “Often these consumers, they don’t think about what’s actually in the bigger picture. And to them, it’s just a fun night out. But if we make them aware of all the implications, in a way, I mean, to put it bluntly, that they have blood on their hands . . . by consuming cocaine, that’s just what it is,” Dr Idler said. “One would think it can make people think twice and think about other ways of having a fun night that does not necessarily include cocaine, because of all the implications it has worldwide.” The Behind The White Line podcast centres around Operation Beech, where authorities seized Mexican cartel cocaine en route for Australia, with DEA agents posing as crime syndicate members and WA Police substituting the real cocaine with a fake substance and dropping it at sea. The sting was highly successful, stopping a then-record 2.4-tonne shipment of cocaine from arriving, seizing $2 million cash and making a dozen arrests. Dr Idler has spent much time with coca farmers in Colombia to get an understanding of how precarious their lives can be and to document the starting point of the global cocaine supply chain. Criminal gangs fight each other and government forces for control of transport corridors for cocaine, resulting in horrific violence. In Latin America, where cocaine is produced and shipped from, thousands of people are murdered each year as criminal cartels fight to control trafficking routes. Ecuador, which has become a prime transit country for cocaine, had more than 9000 murders last year, a homicide rate of 50 people out of every 100,000. The growing demand in Australia and New Zealand for methamphetamine and cocaine has led to Mexican cartels increasing their presence in Pacific islands such as Fiji, Vanuatu and the Solomon Islands. The Pacific region has been swamped with illicit drugs in 2026, with more than 17 tonnes of illegal narcotics seized by local and international authorities. This is up from 4.6 tonnes for all of 2025. The cartels are increasingly relying on purpose-built “narco-subs” to ferry tonnes of drugs across the Pacific Ocean, viewing the island nations close to Australia and New Zealand as depots to stockpile cocaine and methamphetamine. But these illegal drugs are also seeping out into local communities, which lack the health and law enforcement. Australian Federal Police commissioner Krissy Barrett addressed a Pacific Transnational Crime Summit in Fiji in May and described Australia’s insatiable demand for illicit drugs as “our nation’s shame”. In response to questions from Behind The White Line, the AFP issued a statement saying it had “super charged” its international operations to target drug syndicates in their home countries and well before their shipments hit Australian borders. The AFP statement referred to the launch of Taskforce Thunder last year to coordinate the transnational crime intelligence across Pacific nations. It also pledged to become “more ambitious” in working with Europol on multi-agency drug trafficking operations. The AFP said demand for cocaine in Australia was persistent and the present wholesale price was around $100,000 per kilogram, more than 50 times more than the price paid in Colombia. The AFP did not answer questions about Operation Beech and what its concerns were about the actions of the US Drug Enforcement Administration Agents and West Australian Police.
