Some killers are pathetic. Some are genuinely sorry. And then there are a few – rare but always memorable – that are truly evil.

To the outside world, he was a young, urbane, university-educated qualified psychologist.

On social media he told the world he was a UWA graduate. That he’d worked for Telstra. That he was a mental health worker. That he was a nice boy and a good next-door neighbour.

When in fact, he was the devil next door.

Over Easter weekend in 2021, Luke David Fawcett murdered his next door neighbour Maree Collins for no apparent reason.

He then murdered her brother Wayne Johnson, who had come to check on his sister.

The details of their murders, and the things he did during, in between and after the crimes sent shivers up the spine of everyone in the courtroom, with Judge Jennifer Smith describing the crimes as sustained, brutal and merciless.
