Federal Election 2019: Anne Aly declares victory for Labor in Cowan

Labor MP Anne Aly has declared victory in the state’s most marginal seat.

Dr Aly took to Facebook tonight to declare a win in her seat of Cowan in Perth’s northern suburbs.

“Thank you to the wonderful, passionate, kind-hearted Cowan community for allowing me to serve as your local MP for another three years,” Dr Aly wrote.

“It was a long and close count, but today we’re declaring it a win. I’d like to say a special thank you to (Liberal candidate) Isaac Stewart for putting his hand up to serve our community.”

“I am so grateful to continue representing this community. I won’t let you down.”

At 6pm tonight, 87.74 per cent of the vote had been counted in the seat with Dr Aly 1,239 votes ahead of Mr Stewart with a 0.08 per cent swing towards her.

A spokesman for Dr Aly said Mr Stewart would need to win more than two thirds of the remaining vote to win the seat.

Cowan had been heavily targeted by the Liberals with Prime Minister Scott Morrison paying the seat three visits during the campaign.
