WA Labor MPs say Federal Election loss not Bill Shorten’s fault

Don’t blame Bill — that’s the message WA Labor MPs are spruiking ahead of the Federal party’s much-anticipated release of its autopsy later this week into what went so drastically wrong at their humiliating May election defeat. Federal Labor’s most senior representative in WA, shadow cabinet minister Madeleine King and former WA Labor State secretary and now Federal Perth MP Patrick Gorman have stuck up for the man who steered the party into election oblivion, former leader Bill Shorten. They say it would be wrong to lay blame solely with Mr Shorten for losing what many thought was an unloseable election for Labor. “There is a whole team involved in this (defeat). We work on decisions collectively and have to take responsibility collectively,” Ms King said. Mr Gorman, also principal adviser to former prime minister Kevin Rudd in 2013, said he would be “disappointed if the review unfairly blames Bill”. “I think Bill is a decent human being, with Labor values, who has paid the ultimate political price already,” Mr Gorman said. “There is no need for any gratuitous blame or finger-pointing. “The Labor Party is a collective party. And we need to take collective responsibility.” But while both said Shorten-shaming would be wrong, they have called for a massive overhaul of the way the party campaigns in WA at Federal elections. They said centrally based national campaigns, with little input from WA MPs, were killing Labor’s chances in WA. “To state the obvious, how could people running a campaign, holed up in Parramatta headquarters, possibly be expected to understand on-the-ground issues in Western Australia?” Ms King said. “It’s (about) moving away from a fully centralised campaign. My very strong view is that Labor needs to run a WA campaign with WA people.” Mr Gorman had this warning for Federal Labor as it prepared to release its election review this week. “The real test now, is whether the review is embraced by the party, and whether we actually implement it,” he said. “I am worried, on our previous history, that Labor has not always implemented recommendations of reviews we have had.”
