A prison west of Brisbane is in lockdown after a handful of inmates gained access to the roof.

Tactical response officers and a dog squad have been sent to Borallon Training and Correctional Centre near Ipswich after a small number of prisoners sparked the incident at about noon on Friday.

It is believed up to three prisoners are on the roof.

Negotiations have begun with the inmates in an attempt to get them to surrender.

Queensland Corrective Services say the situation is ongoing.
