A central Queensland prison remains in lockdown more than 17 hours after inmates rioted, with those who damaged property and lit fires facing possible criminal charges.

The riot broke out at the Capricornia Correctional Centre, just north of Rockhampton, on Thursday morning.

Queensland Corrective Services called in backup, including dog squad units and emergency response teams, to bring the inmates back under control.

About 30 prisoners were contained in an area by 1pm and about one and a half hours later the final rioters surrendered.

QCS Deputy Commissioner Custodial Operations Gary McCahon said the prison remained in total lockdown as of 7.20am on Friday morning.

Police are considering laying criminal charges against the prisoners involved.

"The behaviour seen yesterday was simply disgraceful," Mr McCahon said in a statement on Friday.

"The wanton destruction of property and the risks to our officers and other prisoners was totally unacceptable behaviour. "

Inmates could also face internal discipline.

No QCS officers, police, firefighters or emergency services workers who responded to the riot were injured.

"I am incredibly thankful that there are no reports of officer injury at this stage," Mr McCahon said.

"Our officers and our public safety partners faced a very dangerous situation yesterday, and everyone did a remarkable job to resolve the situation."
