Ayor Makur Chuot gives birth to second son before being sworn into WA’s Upper House as first South Sudanese MP

Ayor Makur Chuot is ready. Refugee, teen mum, international model, accountant and now, politician, the trailblazing 31-year-old is not daunted by the thought of starting her latest role just days after giving birth (she posed radiantly for our exclusive shoot at 40 weeks pregnant). When Chuot is sworn into WA Parliament’s Upper House next week, making her Australia’s first South Sudanese MP and WA’s first MP of African descent, baby son Achol Deng, who was born last Saturday, won’t be far away. And her “village” — the exact type of support network referred to in that famous African proverb — will be right behind. Among them is partner Deng Acol, her teenage son Thokbeny, her mother and siblings, the local South Sudanese community and Chuot’s western friends, including former Labor MP Janine Freeman, who encouraged her to run for Parliament. It is partly because of this support that the incoming Labor MP holds no fear about the challenges that lie ahead. But it is also because, throughout her extraordinary life, she has faced challenges far tougher than juggling the work-life balance. A guiding light throughout her life has been Chuot’s mother, Helena Yar Enock, whose strength and courage in the most tragic of circumstances delivered her children a better life. Ms Enock and her eight children — four boys and four girls — arrived in Australia in 2005, marking the end of an almost decade-long fight for refuge and the beginning of a new life in this safe, yet strange, country. The family had to flee South Sudan after Chuot’s father, who was involved in local politics, was killed in 1992 during a civil war which devastated the country. They spent about eight years in the Kakuma refugee camp in Kenya, followed by a year in Nairobi waiting for visas, before settling in Perth’s north-eastern suburbs where Chuot still lives. “My mother is my role model, she has worked really hard for her kids to have better lives, and that better life was for us to be in Australia,” Chuot says. “She only had basic education, but she is a very bright and smart person. Me being a strong woman is from her showing me hard work from an early age. I wouldn’t be where I am today without that.” Culturally, it was deemed more important for boys to gain an education in Africa, so while her brothers studied, Chuot, the eldest daughter, helped with housework and cared for the younger children while her mum ran a small restaurant in the refugee camp. They were skills which would help once she became a mother herself, something which came earlier than anticipated after an unplanned pregnancy at age 17. “In the beginning (becoming a mother) was shocking, but as a South Sudanese, I grew up in a family with so many siblings, so I didn’t struggle. I got support from my family from the very beginning,” she says. “I raised my boy by myself and what kept me strong is my mother.” Pending motherhood forced her to leave Aranmore Catholic College in Year 11, but she would later resume her studies, first with a diploma of business management followed by a university accounting degree. “The greatest thing you can do for yourself as a person, is be educated,” she says. Becoming a mum to Thokbeny, now a soccer-mad 13-year-old, motivated Chuot to pursue a life she could be proud of. So when a modelling agent approached her while she was studying at TAFE, she took the opportunity. It was a decision which would take her all over the world, baby son in tow and continuing her studies online. In WA she rose to prominence at the 2009 Perth Fashion Festival, walking the runway for late designer Ruth Tarvydas, and was signed by Scene Models in Perth and Elite Model Management in New York. Chuot appeared in magazines and TV commercials and walked on runways in New York, London and Paris. She turned down an offer to be based permanently in the United States, returning home in time for Thokbeny to start school. Upon settling back in WA, Chuot set out to mentor young South Sudanese women by establishing the Face of South Sudan Australia pageant. Modelling and football (younger sister Akec Makur Chuot plays for Richmond in the AFLW) were not obvious career choices for South Sudanese women but Helena encouraged her daughters. “She always says you have to do what you are good at, what you are gifted at,” Chuot says. “Growing up, we always had to have a hidden face, or not look at someone when we were talking to them, culturally you have to be very respectful. Modelling gave me a sense of confidence as a woman.” This confidence will now propel her in her political career in the Legislative Council after Chuot was elected in the North Metropolitan region in the Labor landslide in March. She had previously volunteered for Freeman and Federal Labor member Anne Aly but was initially hesitant about running for Parliament. “Politics back home, we saw family members killed and tribes fighting, there are a lot of bad images I had from early on with the political industry,” she says. “But there has never been an experience here that could make me not want to represent the community, and the Labor Party has a great agenda. I want to see if there is anything I can add to the team, to better my community.” As someone who arrived in Australia with nothing, and who has taken every opportunity given to her, she also hoped to show the value that migrants can add to the community. “It’s good to have young women in every sort of employment industry, and I feel like I am ready,” she says. “It is doable. I’ve done it before. I’ve been a working mum, a university mum, a modelling mum. “My (teenage) son is doing really well, he’s a good boy, he’s respectful, I’m very proud. And I’ve got my support network, so I’m not scared in terms of having a child and managing my job.” She hopes the choices she has made inspire her boys, in the same way she and her siblings have strived to honour their mother by working hard and taking nothing for granted. “Kids learn by what they see every day.” she says. “I bring up my boys showing them nothing comes easy, you’ve got to get up every morning and work hard to have a better future.”
