Construction is progressing for a new primary school in Perth’s northern suburb of Alkimos but will likely only have half its full capacity enrolled when first open.

With ground works well underway at the site, the school — currently dubbed Alkimos North East Primary School — is on track to be open for the start of the 2027 school year.

It will accept students from kindy to year 6 and will feature a number of blocks including two double storey classroom blocks, a single story block with education support, and sports courts.

While it has the capacity to hold up to 540 students, it but is only expected to have an initial enrolment of around 200.

The Cook Government has put $45.5 million of funding into the school which was first announced in January 2025.

“It’s really, really exciting to see this school slowly but surely come to life, which will be undoubtedly so welcomed by the families that are moving into Alkimos,” she said.

The school is expected to take pressure away from nearby Shorehaven Primary School and Alkimos Beach Primary School.

Alkimos is one of Perth’s fastest growing areas with its population increasing rapidly in the most recent census results.

Ms Winton said the government was focusing its efforts on Perth’s outer suburbs which were seeing fast-paced population growth.

“We are committed as a government to providing high quality education infrastructure and providing that high quality education infrastructure close to where families live,” she said.

“We know that in particular, it’s in our fast growing outer suburbs.

“We know that more and more families are choosing Alkimos and that’s why we have invested $45.5 million for this new school here that is going to be so welcomed by the local community.”
