Perth Glory star signing Daniel Sturridge will be another no-show and former Socceroos goalkeeper Brad Jones is in doubt for Sunday’s A-League clash with table-topping Melbourne Victory.

Glory coach Richard Garcia confirmed Sturridge will not play against unbeaten Victory at AAMI Park and is likely to miss several more weeks.

Sturridge made a nine-minute cameo in the opening home draw against Adelaide United but missed last week’s 1-0 loss to Western United.

When asked whether the former England and Liverpool striker would make an appearance on Sunday Garcia said: “No”.

“We keep telling everyone wanting to see Daniel Sturridge, we want them to see the best Daniel Sturridge, not Daniel Sturridge for a week and then not see him for another month.”

Garcia said Sturridge was not carrying any injuries and they were trying to compress a full pre-season without jeopardising his fitness.

“We want to make sure we get him fit,” he said.

“There’s been a lot made of it. I don’t see why. It’s the normality of an athlete trying to get fit.

“That’s where we sit with it. A guy of any calibre has to come in and get fit.”

When asked when the prize recruit may play, Garcia said: “How long is a piece of string?”.

“Daniel is very keen on making an impact on the league, showing the quality he has,” he said.

“He’s a footballer, he wants to play. We’ve had to hold him back from that.

“We’re trying to get him through a pre-season in a compressed time.”

Jones is struggling with a calf injury picked up against Western United, leaving the door open to an A-League debut for 20-year-old Cameron Cook.

“Brad picked up a little knock. He’s not travelling too well,” Garcia said.

“We’re going to leave it until the last minute . We’ll give him every possibility but he’s touch and go.

“Cameron Cook is a fantastic young guy who has progressed really well in the past 12 months.

“He’s turned from a young boy into a man.

“You can tell he is starting to evolve as a footballer and as a person.”

Glory have signed former Australia under-17 goalkeeper Nicholas Sorras, 23, from NPL side Sydney Olympic on a short-term contract with veteran Liam Reddy recovering from shoulder surgery and unlikely to be ready before the New Year.

Glory head into the second of an eight away-game run against Victory, led by former coach Tony Popovic and with six ex-Glory players in the squad.

But Garcia does not believe it gives them an advantage.

“They know us as well as we know them,” he said.

“They look good because they’ve got results but they are still a team that’s new to each other.”
