The AFL ladder is far from locked in with Round 23 results threatening to turn the finals race on its head and impact club draft picks. Who will secure the bottom-two spots in the eight, and which clubs will clinch a crucial finals double chance? Follow our live ladder below across the weekend to see where your side finishes up. 1. MELBOURNE Record: 16-1-4, 132.3% R23: Geelong, GMHBA Stadium, Saturday 7.25pm A first minor premiership since 1964 awaits the Demons. All they need to do is beat the Cats. But that’s easier said than done given Geelong has won 89 of its past 100 matches at GMHBA Stadium. A loss could see Melbourne finish as low as third. 2. GEELONG Record: 16-5, 128.6% R23: Melbourne, GMHBA Stadium, Saturday 7.25pm The Cats have won six of their past seven matches and one more win against the Demons on their home turf will see them secure the minor premiership. A loss could see the premiership favourite finish as low as fourth, though. 3. PORT ADELAIDE Record: 16-5, 127.3% R23: Western Bulldogs, Marvel Stadium, Friday 7.50pm A huge game for the Power against fellow top-four side the Bulldogs. Port Adelaide is largely unproven against the better teams this year with a 3-4 record against top-eight sides. But a win here would be a major shot in the arm heading into finals. Regardless, top-four is locked in. 4. WESTERN BULLDOGS Record: 15-6, 134.5% R23: Port Adelaide, Marvel Stadium, Friday 7.50pm Not completely safe inside the top-four just yet, meaning a win over the Power is important both for ladder positions and confidence levels after consecutive losses to Essendon and Hawthorn. 5. BRISBANE LIONS Record: 14-7, 132.7% R23: West Coast Eagles, Gabba, Saturday 4.35pm Can still finish in the top-four if they can knock out the Eagles and the Western Bulldogs lose to Port Adelaide. Strong form over the past two weeks indicates getting past West Coast won’t be a problem. 6. SYDNEY Record: 14-7, 115.1% R23: Gold Coast, Marvel Stadium, Saturday 1.45pm Can’t move much from their current ladder position. It will be fifth or sixth spot to finish the year for the Swans. However, they will be keen to get one back on the Suns after suffering a 40-point loss when the two teams last met in Round 6. 7. GWS GIANTS Record: 10-1-10, 98.9% R23: Carlton, Marvel Stadium, Saturday 7.40pm The Giants look set to hit finals in some good form with a third-straight win over the Blues this weekend. But a loss could be potentially disastrous and see them miss the finals cut. 8. ESSENDON Record: 10-11, 107.2% R23: Collingwood, MCG, Sunday 3.20pm Win and the Bombers are in. Could they end a drought of days without a finals win, which is approaching 6,200 days? Anything is possible. 9. WEST COAST Record: 10-11, 94.9% R23: Brisbane To make the top eight, West Coast needs to beat the Lions and then hope either GWS loses to Carlton or Essendon falls to Collingwood. Toppling Brisbane seems difficult in itself, given the Eagles’ run of three losses. 10. FREMANTLE Record: 10-11, 89% R23: St Kilda Need things to fall its way to make the finals due to a poor percentage. Fremantle is relying not only on beating the Saints, but on Carlton defeating the Giants, Collingwood upstaging Essendon and Brisbane beating the Dockers’ fierce rival West Coast. 11. RICHMOND Record: 9-12, 97.8% R23: Hawthorn Mathematically, the Tigers have a chance of playing finals. But it would require a stack of luck, a complete form turnaround and a calculator. A depleted Richmond needs to belt the Hawks and for West Coast, Essendon and Fremantle to all lose, all while the Tigers make up a 9.6 percentage gap on the Bombers. 12. ST KILDA Record: 9-12, 88% R23: Fremantle The Saints’ prospects of a second successive season in the finals are slimmer than Richmond’s, so we are talking in the same region of Powerball-winning odds. Would need to beat the Dockers, then for West Coast, Richmond and Essendon to lose, and the Saints to overturn a 19.2 per cent on the Bombers - a swing of about 335 points between the two games. 13. CARLTON Record: 8-13 88.7% R23: GWS Can send star Eddie Betts - and potentially coach David Teague - out on a high, as well as prevent the Giants from playing finals, but the Blues cannot move higher than 11th if they win. 14. HAWTHORN Record: 7-13-1 84.5% R23: Richmond Aiming for four victories on the trot and to farewell coach Alastair Clarkson and champion Shaun Burgoyne in style. Will finish between 13th and 15th depending on other results. 15. GOLD COAST Record: 7-14 80% R23: Sydney The Suns would climb as high as 13th and mark their best finish since 2014 if they defeated the Swans, Carlton and Hawthorn lost, and Gold Coast made up 8.8 per cent on the Blues. 16. COLLINGWOOD Record: 6-15 87% R23: Essendon Cannot claim the wooden spoon, but the Magpies’ highest possible placing is 15th and the club has not fallen that low since 2005. Collingwood’s first-round pick this year is tied to GWS after a trade last period but getting father-son gun Nick Daicos will soften the blow of a horror 2021. 17. ADELAIDE Record: 6-15 79.2% R23: North Melbourne Will avoid a second consecutive wooden spoon, even if it loses to the Kangaroos. That means North Melbourne, not the hometown Crows, is in the box seat to secure SANFL young gun Jason Horne-Francis in the national draft. 18. NORTH MELBOURNE Record: 4-16-1 71% R23: Adelaide Secured its first wooden spoon since 1972 after losing last week, ensuring the club will have the first call in the national draft. A win over the Crows would leave the Kangaroos with a better record than any bottom side since Brisbane (5-16-1) in 1998.
