David Koch is as passionate about his beloved Port Adelaide as rival Eddie McGuire is about Collingwood.

So when Ollie Wines became the first ever Power player to win the Brownlow Medal on Sunday night, the man affectionately known as ‘Kochie’ was quick to pick up the phone.

“Kochie, you’re on camera with Channel Seven,” Wines says quickly as he answers Koch’s FaceTime call.

But the fact he was interrupting a media photo shoot didn’t bother Koch at all.

“I can not believe it,” Koch starts out.

“You spoke so well. We are incredibly proud of you. The first Port Adelaide Brownlow Medallist. Bloody hell,” he continues as surrounding media laugh.

“We talked to your mum,” Koch admits as Wines can’t hide his smile.

“So proud of you.”

Koch was surrounded by his family as he made the video call to his star player.

Denied entry to WA, like his counterpart McGuire in the lead up to the grand final, Koch was unable to witness Wines’ remarkable feat first-hand at Optus Stadium.

But Wines said Koch had accepted his fate, especially given McGuire was also knocked back.

“He was ok with it then,” Wines joked.

The 26-year-old stormed home to claim the Brownlow Medal with 36 votes, three ahead of second placed Marcus Bontempelli.
