Eagles champion Ben Cousins has delivered a warning to Dockers fans ahead of what is arguably the club’s most promising finals series in its history.

The 2005 Brownlow Medallist appeared on Triple M in Melbourne alongside Mick Molloy and Nick Riewoldt, with the retired Saints forward asking if there was a “buzz” in Perth as the Dockers’ approach September football.

Cousins said the club’s impressive home and away season had fans dreaming big, but that anticipation of a maiden premiership brought with it nervous energy.

“I guess anyone that’s in the frame is a bit edgy heading towards finals but there is that weight, because they’ve been so dominant during the home and away (season) . . . it’s a reminder too that if you look at the statistics of sides that finish on top how many go on to win the flag,” Cousins said.

“It’s as little as just over 30 per cent I think, which is not a lot — now that’s not reason why they can’t win it.

“But it’s just a reminder they need to keep telling themselves that the work is only just about to start, not finish.”

The 2006 premiership player did not suggest Fremantle’s first taste of glory was out of reach.

Speaking glowingly of the club’s list, Cousins claimed few teams would be able to match them for talent, and that a sustained tilt at success should be expected.

“If and when they do, I think they’re going to be in the window for quite some time. This side on paper, I think it more than stacks up against any side . . . ,“ he said.

Molloy reminded the retired Eagle that most of the Dockers’ star players had signed contract extensions in a sign they believed success was not too distant.

In late July, emerging star Murphy Reid extended his current contract by another three years to tie him to the harbour town until at least 2032.

Fremantle also have fellow Victorians Serong (2034), Hayden Young (2033), Andrew Brayshaw (2031), Josh Treacy (2030) and Sean Darcy (2030) contracted into the next decade.

“You wouldn’t be going anywhere either,” Cousins said, “but it’d be bigger than the America’s Cup when (Australia) won that, it would be that big.”
