Glen Quartermain: The 10 storylines that could shape the 2021 AFL season

The 2020 AFL season was a 10,000-piece jigsaw with missing bits for players, administrators, broadcasters and fans. And the early signs are 2021 won’t get any easier. Glen Quartermain looks at 10 season shapers for 2021. 1. COVID Last year the AFL asked for agility and flexibility to combat the pandemic. This year the key word could could be patience. The 2020 season was difficult, but new for players, so they endured restrictions, hub life and regular COVID testing in the knowledge it was a one-off and that next year it would all be back to normal. Now that we know that is a long shot, it’s going to be a treacherous road ahead for the 800 players on AFL lists, as well as coaches, assistants and administrative staff. The AFL has laid down only six rounds, warned clubs to brace for interstate road trips lasting several weeks but assured them hubs would be a last resort. The league has told players they will be at the mercy of their own State regulations and that the AFL would not be doubling down with any extra layer of restrictions. 2. Rule changes There are three changes for this season that the league hopes will reduce congestion and increase scoring. Interchanges will be slashed from 90 to 75 rotations per match in a bid to “introduce fatigue” back into the game, while players kicking out after a behind will be given 15m between the man on the mark, an increase from 10m last season. But the most contentious new rule that has caused anger and confusion is the new man-on-the-mark rule with 50m penalties handed against players on the mark who move outside a 1m “level of tolerance” before play on is called. Some coaches, including West Coast’s Adam Simpson, believe it will revolutionise the game. There will be 500 umpire visits to AFL clubs before the start of the season to explain the changes. Quarter lengths will also return to 20 minutes plus time-on, up from last year’s 16 minutes and time-on. Will that change if the AFL has to condense fixtures again? 3. Mrs Hardwick Will a marriage split prove a greater obstacle to a Richmond three-peat than 17 rival clubs? Tigers’ coach Damien Hardwick’s separation from wife Danielle, with whom he has three children, has caused genuine tension at Punt Rd, given captain Trent Cotchin, his wife Brooke and a number of other players, are tight with the woman affectionately known as “Mrs Hardwick”. The coach is in a new relationship with Tigers sales representative Alexandra Crow. “There is definitely no side-taking. Dimma (Hardwick) spoke last week saying he highly encourages everyone to support Danielle,” Cotchin said. “No one likes seeing a family break down in any sort of way so it’s been a challenging time for all but it’s a private matter I would love to leave alone.” The Tigers, with three flags in four years, are pretty much self-coached these days and will remain the team to beat. 4. Geelong’s big three recruits Jeremy Cameron, Isaac Smith and Shaun Higgins. Let’s be honest, the Cats were stiffed in 2020 by one man, Dustin Martin. Leading by 22 points just before half-time in the grand final at the Gabba, Geelong looked set for an upset before the curtain lifted on The Dusty Show. The Cats were busy in the off-season, recruiting much needed outside leg speed (Isaac Smith), an accumulator (Shaun Higgins) and forward target (Jeremy Cameron) to take the pressure off 2020 Coleman medallist Tom Hawkins (49 goals). But they better win it this year as they have the second-oldest list in the competition (average age 25.4), behind St Kilda (25.5). 5. Fyfe to the forward line In his first season as coach Justin Longmuir bedded down young midfielders Adam Cerra, Andrew Brayshaw and Caleb Serong, he hopes will form the nucleus of the engine room along with 23-year-old Darcy Tucker. Wily veteran David Mundy will go around again and then there is Nat Fyfe. The dual Brownlow medallist is expected to be Longmuir’s “luxury”, a class act who can be released into attack for longer periods. Fyfe can provide a third target alongside Matt Taberner and Rory Lobb, with Jesse Hogan now at Greater Western Sydney, and with Michael Walters at high forward, it may be a tough forward line to match up. 6. Yeo and the Eagles midfield Nic Naitanui, Luke Shuey, Andrew Gaff and Tim Kelly, provide the grunt and polish, Dom Sheed, Liam Duggan and Jack Redden the depth, but Eliot Yeo is the linchpin on which the West Coast midfield hums to its optimum performance. There is no better two-way player on the Eagles’ list than Yeo. The Eagles are taking a cautious approach with All-Australian Yeo’s recovery from osteitis pubis which has kept him out of the team since round 11 last season. 7. Matt Rowell and the double The Gold Coast teenager played the first five games of 2020 and polled nine Brownlow votes — three consecutive threes — before a shoulder injury put a cruel end to a spectacular debut season. Now fully fit, he is at a prohibitive $1.30 to win the Rising Star award and a tempting $15 for the Brownlow. This kid gets a heap of the footy and polls his footy socks off. Don’t discount him winning both. 8. Can the Dogs repeat their 2016 heroics? A midfield already brimming with depth welcomes Adam Treloar, the victim of Collingwood’s salary cap horror show, and retains the sublimely talented Josh Dunkley who requested a trade to Essendon in the off-season, and No. 1 draft pick, Jamarra Ugle-Hagan. St Kilda is the other rising fancy, with restricted free agent Brad Crouch bolstering their midfield depth, Tigers premiership player Jack Higgins another quality small forward and Shaun McKernan a set of steak knives adding key position depth in attack. Carlton and Melbourne will be other teams in the watch this space bracket. 9. Bad old Collingwood The Magpies had an off-season from hell given their salary cap fiasco and Eddie McGuire’s resignation as president over the Do Better report. Coach Nathan Buckley is entering his 10th season at the helm, but his support has been diluted given McGuire’s departure. If Collingwood gets off to a bad start, it will get so hot in the kitchen, the Pies will blister. Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin is another player who needs to deliver at least a finals win. 10. Trade bait Patrick Cripps’ contract runs out at the end of 2021 and while there is no doubting the Northampton product’s sincerity in stating his loyalty to Carlton, the longer he goes without re-signing the more he will be linked to a return to Western Australia. Fremantle might be best placed given West Coast’s senior players recently agreed to take a pay cut to ease the pain caused by COVID with the caveat the club wouldn’t use the leftover cash to chase a big-name free agent at season’s end. The Blues can help get him across the line if they make the eight, as Cripps has never played a finals across his 118-game career. The Dockers will also be nervously waiting for Adam Cerra to re-sign given the Victorian is out of contract at the end of the season.
