Premiership winner Matthew Lloyd has warned the Gold Coast Suns not to splurge on Fremantle forward Rory Lobb, believing his $700,000-per season price tag is too high.

As rumours continue to swirl about Lobb’s playing future at the Dockers, reports emerged on the weekend that the struggling Suns were keen to pursue the key position star.

But Lloyd says he’d tread cautiously if he were Gold Coast boss.

“It’s said that he’s on $700,000 a year at the Dockers,” he said on Sportsday.

“The Suns have overpaid for players too often.

“I just don’t want to see the Suns fall into another guy and overpay them just because it’s hard to attract players up there.

“Develop your own.”

Lobb remains contracted at Fremantle until the end of 2022, but the Herald Sun reports the 28-year-old’s girlfriend is keen to head east for work purposes and to reunite with family.

The key forward/ruck signed a four-year deal when he was traded to the Dockers back in 2018 as part of the deal that saw Lachie Neale become a Lion.

On Friday Lobb’s manager Colin Young said neither he or the Docker had courted a trade from Victorian clubs.

But he could not guarantee Lobb would be at Fremantle next season.

The big man is enjoying his best season in purple, kicking two bags of four goals to take his tally to 20 for the year — double his output in 2020.
