New Dockers captain Miller eyes AFLW flag
Star Fremantle midfielder Hayley Miller has set her sights on leading the club to their maiden AFLW flag in 2022 after taking over as captain from Kara Antonio.
Miller was voted in as captain by the player group, and she will be joined in a five-person leadership group by vice-captains Kiara Bowers and Ange Stannett, as well as Gabby O'Sullivan and Stephanie Cain.
Antonio stepped down as skipper last month after five years in the role, saying she believed the time was right for someone else to take the reins.
The Dockers were on track to win the AFLW flag in 2020 before the season was called off midway through the finals due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Fremantle were bundled out of the 2021 flag race by Melbourne in a qualifying final.
The Dockers have set themselves the goal of winning the premiership in 2022.
"There's only one thing that we want and that's to play finals and go all the way," 25-year-old Miller said.
"That's our number one focus and that's what we want to bring this year.
"Prior to today, the proudest moment in my life was being drafted and going as the number one draft pick for Fremantle in the very first year and I knew at the time I wouldn't realise the significance of that until I finished playing.
"Today, to stand and be the captain of this footy club is an incredibly proud moment for me.
"I remember having a conversation with our previous coach early on, that a goal of mine was to captain Fremantle. For that to have happened today is pretty incredible."
The Dockers' season kicks off with a twilight fixture against Adelaide at Fremantle Oval on January 8.
