Walyalup (Fremantle) coach Justin Longmuir says he’s conducting his own search to find the mystery Wharfie Time operator as he praised it for helping the Dockers get over the line against the Hawks.
The Dockers’ thrilling win over Hawthorn was highlighted by their late fourth-quarter surge, which saw Optus Stadium activate Wharfie Time for the first time this season.
It was pressed after Michael Frederick reduced the margin to four points and saw the home side kick three goals in six minutes to end the contest.
Longmuir said the timing was perfect and did not deny the effect it has on his own side and the opposition.
“It’s a mystery to me who chooses it, I’m trying to get to the bottom of it” he told 7News.
“But they seem to time it really well, when the momentum has started but hasn’t gone to it’s fullest.
“I know our players get a lot of energy off it, and I would imagine it would spook the opposition to some degree so it’s a great initiative by the club.”
The only sour note from their eighth straight victory was a knee injury to Alex Pearce, which will rule him out of this weekend’s clash with Essendon.
On Tuesday, the Dockers confirmed a 1-3 week timeline with all eyes on whether he will be fit to face Brisbane for a blockbuster round 12 clash at the Gabba.
However, Longmuir was confident that he had plenty of options to cover the captain regardless.
“We’re happy it’s short-term, and he’s available next week, but at the most it would be three weeks, but fingers crossed it’s on the shorter end,” he said.
“We’ve got some key backs playing some really good footy down at Peel who have been building their time for an opportunity.
“Obviously Oscar McDonald has played a fair bit of footy for us over the last 18 months, Hugh Davies is in good form, and Josh Draper is in good form, probably playing a little higher up the ground on smalls, but he’s played AFL as a key back, so we’ve got good options there.”
Tuesday also saw ruckman Sean Darcy spotted briefly training with the main group as he works his way back from a calf injury.
The injury-prone 27-year-old has not played since round five, with Mason Cox being servicable if not outstanding in his absence.
Darcy did his first jumping routines since being injured, and Cox’s window to lock down is spot may be rapidly closing.
“Darcy is getting closer and progressing really well, it was good to see him in a couple of drills in the back end,” he said.
“We expect him back into 1-3 weeks but he’s progressing really well.”
Fremantle will be known as Walyalup for Sir Doug Nicholls Rounds.
