A snap of Harris kicking the ball during her side’s three-point win over the Western Bulldogs on Sunday was shared on Twitter by 7AFL.

But the post turned sour, with “inappropriate and offensive” comments behind a decision to take it down.

“Recently we published an image of AFLW player Tayla Harris,” 7AFL said in a follow-up post.

“The original purpose in publishing the image was to celebrate the power, athleticism and skills on show in Carlton’s thrilling win over the Western Bulldogs.

“The image attracted a number of comments, some of which were inappropriate and offensive.

“As a consequence we have removed the image and the comments.”

The overwhelming response was that the picture, taken by snapper Michael Willson, should have stayed.

“The problem isn't with the image,” Twitter user Dough_boy11 posted.

“It's with the misogynistic behaviour by the supporters in the comments. Try blocking these accounts from your social media. Take a stand.”

Another, Twitter user j0saka, described the situation as “a shame”.

(Harris) is awesome for the AFLW game. These images should be promoted to the young girls coming through, to inspire and motivate them,” he said.

“Block the trolls, don't let their immaturity or hatred be a detriment to the real football fans out there.”

The episode prompted many, including Geelong star Patrick Dangerfield, sports journalist Neroli Meadows and the man behind the lens to re-share it.

“#Fthehaters,” Dangerfield wrote.

“I am posting this magnificent photo of Tayla Harris (to) support and celebrate a fantastic athlete in full flight,” commentator Stephen Quartermain posted.

Harris herself chimed in: “Here’s a pic of me at work... think about this before your derogatory comments, animals.”
