VideoIt's been a shocking day for footballers in this state, with Jesse Hogan, Elijah Taylor and Harley Bennell in the headlines for all the wrong reasons.

Collingwood midfielder Chris Mayne is fit to return from a fractured cheekbone in Saturday night’s elimination final against West Coast, but Magpies coach Nathan Buckley stopped short of guaranteeing the former Fremantle forward a spot in the team.

Mayne suffered concussion and a broken cheekbone in a brutal collision with Carlton’s Patrick Cripps in round 14.

Mayne has played in all six of Collingwood’s finals since joining the club and has performed strongly on the September stage.

The 31-year-old is still chasing an elusive premiership after experiencing grand final defeats with the Dockers in 2013 and the Magpies in 2018.

Buckley said Mayne was available for selection.

“He’s going really well. He trained fully last week and again earlier this week on arrival in Perth,” he said.

“He’s a desperate and hungry individual within our squad. He wants to be a part of team success and has left no stone unturned to be a part of that.

“And we’ve witnessed that in the last two or three weeks overcoming this particular injury. He’s putting himself in good shape.”

Buckley was bullish about his side’s chances despite being installed the biggest outsiders of the weekend.

The Eagles won by 66 points — their biggest win of the year — as spearhead Josh Kennedy kicked seven goals when the teams met in Perth in round eight.

“The underdog status is external to us. We’ve got great belief that we can go out and perform and execute and win the game of footy,” Buckley said.

“We understand that we’re coming up against a side that the last time we met them, we fell a long way short of. They played as good a footy as we’ve faced through 2020 in that game in round eight and we’ve got to turn the tables on that.”

Key West Coast quartet Jeremy McGovern, Luke Shuey, Jack Redden and Jamie Cripps all trained behind closed doors at Optus Stadium on Wednesday night and are set to be named to return.

Defender Will Schofield, ruckman-forward Bailey Williams, small forward Jack Petruccelle and final-round debutant Luke Foley are among those under pressure to hold their spots.

The clubs don’t need to submit their teams until Friday afternoon.
