Corey Rocchiccioli has been lavished with praise by George Bailey, with the head of Australia’s selection panel saying the WA off-spinner could not be doing much more to press his claims for a Test call-up.

Rocchiccioli has established himself as the Sheffield Shield’s unquestioned premier slow bowler in recent years, having collected 122 wickets across the last three seasons of the domestic red-ball competition.

Last month, he claimed eight wickets for a Cricket Australia XI in a tour game against Bangladesh, who went on to secure a 1-1 draw in their Test series with Australia.

But when a partner or back-up to Nathan Lyon has been required since his emergence, Victoria’s Todd Murphy and Tasmania left-armer Matthew Kuhnemann have remained the selection panel’s preferred options.

Later this month, Rocchiccioli will have a chance to press his claims for January’s Test tour of India, having been selected in an Australia A squad which will head to the country for a pair of four-day matches.

Bailey said the 28-year-old’s name was “firmly in the conversation” when the depth in Australia’s spin stocks was being discussed.

“He just continues to impress, and that’s the feedback that we try and consistently give him, without frustrating him too much, when inevitably, players want to know what more they can be doing,” Bailey said.

“I think he’s doing everything that he possibly can.

“(It’s) another great opportunity for him in subcontinent conditions. I think he’s got a great skill-set in Australia, in terms of his height and his bounce that he gets, so this will be another opportunity.

“He has been there before and performed well over there, so we expect him to do the same and continue making those questions, those conversations, really challenging. That’s great, we love depth.”

Rocchiccioli will be joined by Jhye Richardson on the ‘A’ tour. The WA fast bowler lost his national contract in April, with Bailey saying he had not yet rediscovered top form after returning from major shoulder surgery.

Bailey said he was hopeful the four-Test quick was now approaching the peak of his capabilities, but expressed doubt over whether his bowling speed would ever recover to where it figured in the early stages of his career.

“He’s an incredibly skilful bowler, Jhye,” Bailey said.

“Without projecting forward and knowing exactly what and who will be required on that Indian trip come January, we’re going to need some depth in that area.

“I don’t know if he’ll ever get back to that mid-140(km/h) pace that he had, (before) some of his shoulder injuries, but I don’t think he necessarily needs to be at that to still have an enormous impact.

“The continual message to him, and hopefully what we start to see, is just that ability to back up from innings to innings, game to game, and be consistent around what that execution and what that pace looks like.”

The squads for Australia’s One-Day International series against Zimbabwe and South Africa later this month have also been confirmed, with WA quartet Mitch Marsh, Cam Green, Cooper Connolly and Josh Inglis selected.

Connolly is slated to return to bowling on the tour, having recovered from a stress reaction in his back which had limited his all-round capabilities since the conclusion of the home summer.

Under-pressure batter Marnus Labuschagne has been dropped from the ODI squad and Bailey turned down the chance to confirm he would be a part of the group for the Test series against South Africa, which is slated to be revealed next week.

All-rounder Aaron Hardie and fast bowler Mahli Beardman are the two Sandgropers in the Australia A squad for three one-day matches in India, which will be played after the red-ball series concludes.
