Glenn Maxwell’s career ‘coming to an end’ after shock T20 World Cup exit, says Ricky Ponting
Glenn Maxwell won’t feature in another T20 World Cup for Australia, according to former captain Ricky Ponting, who believes his career is “coming to an end”.
It comes as the Aussies grapple with the fall-out of a shock exit in the group stage of the tournament, as Ponting called for stars to stand up following a “really poor” performance in Sri Lanka.
Following a wash-out between Zimbabwe and Ireland earlier this week, Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe booked their spot in the round of eight, with Australia unable to make up the points differential.
Ahead of Friday night’s dead rubber clash with Oman, Ponting declared Maxwell is among the stars that won’t feature in 2028.
“Glenn Maxwell, I don’t think will be there. I think it looks to me like his career is coming towards an end,” Ponting told the ICC.
Maxwell made 62 runs through three matches this World Cup but the big-hitter’s strike rate has been much lower than expected.
Turning his attention to the future, Ponting revealed how he believes the line-up could change as they prepare for both the Summer Olympics in Los Angeles and T20 World Cup in New Zealand.
“I think Mitchell Marsh will probably hang on long enough for that, and I think Travis Head will definitely be around,” he said.
“Steve Smith has been very vocal about him wanting to be a part of an Olympic team as well. Whether or not that happens is a different story.”
Ponting expected WA allrounder Cam Green to remain in the side, but said his current form was a concern.
“Green will be around if in fact his form is good enough to stay in the side,” he said. “That’s another bit of a worry I think for Australia, certainly across Test match cricket and probably T20 cricket, what we saw in this World Cup.
“You would think Nathan Ellis would be around, Xavier Bartlett will be there. Cooper Connolly would be there and thereabouts.”
Ponting has also called on several players to “stand up” after a string of underwhelming performances.
“You need to have your best players and your most experienced players standing up and winning big moments for you in these tournaments if you want to go ahead and win and Australia haven’t had that,” he said.
“They probably haven’t got enough out of their top order batting with Cameron Green at No.3 and then Tim David coming in at No.4 for the last couple of games, those two haven’t fired.”
Green made a quickfire 21 in the opening match of the tournament but has since been dismissed for scores of 0 and 3.
The Aussie allrounder sold for over four million Australian dollars at the recent IPL auction.
Ponting also laid to rest any claims that there is not enough emphasis on winning ICC tournaments.
“I think it’s probably hard for a lot of the players to get up immediately after an Ashes series. And let’s not forget, our guys just went through five really long Test matches.
“But trust me, any Australian team that I’ve been in or been around, yes, the (home) international series is important… But the reason you play is to win World Cups and win titles.”
Ponting questioned if the Aussies lacked “aura”, echoing the sentiment of bowling great Glenn McGrath.
“You look at that Australian team on paper, it just doesn’t look to have that sort of aura around it that a lot of other Australian teams have going into ICC events and World Cups,” Ponting said.
