After missing out on international cricket last summer, Perth will host the all-important Fifth Ashes Test at a venue they remain undefeated.

The potential series decider at Optus Stadium is set to begin on January 14.

The venue has hosted just two Test matches — with Australia claiming victory in both.

The first was against India in December 2018, followed by a day-night Test against New Zealand in December 2019.

But the marquee venue was controversially left off Australia’s international schedule last summer when touring India opted for only four Tests — and not five.

Should the Test go ahead as planned in January, it would be the latest finish to an Ashes Test series in Australia in nearly 30 years.

The decision to award Perth — and not Sydney — the final Ashes Test match is a break in tradition.

The series against England will begin at the Gabba and then move to Adelaide for a day-night Test.

Melbourne would then retain its annual Boxing Day clash, followed by the Sydney New Year’s fixture before players would head to Perth.

The cricket schedule is also likely to see Australia take on Afghanistan in Hobart as a warm-up Test before the Ashes begins.

That Test had been given to Perth as compensation for losing out on the India tour last summer, but due to COVID restrictions it never went ahead.

The full summer schedule is set to be released next week by Cricket Australia.
