Frugal and fun. That’s what it’s like to play in Fremantle’s back six this season, according to All-Australian defender Jordan Clark.
“When you make a blue, we have a laugh about it, pull the p..s out of each other mid-game and all that sort of thing,” Clark said.
“We have played a lot of footy together now, this group, and it even shows how Judy McVee’s come in and found his feet straight away. He’s slotted in beautifully and made us better.”
The Dockers have conceded only 1006 points at an average of 67.06 across 15 games.
Alex Pearce and Brennan Cox take the best key forwards, Clark, McVee and Karl Worner provide run and accountability, while Heath Chapman is a hybrid beast who can solve riddles for the coach and also be an offensive weapon.
“We’re a mixture of all sorts back there, but we all get along like a house on fire, and to be honest, it’s like running out with six brothers,” Clark said.
“We certainly don’t take Brennan Cox and Moose (Pearce) for granted. Cox goes under the radar a fair bit, and if you look at his numbers, he’s one of the best backmen in the comp with what he can do at ground level, aerially, and in the contest.
“He’s so calm, composed, strong, rarely gets beaten, so I think he’s an unheralded defender that needs a little bit more credit.
“Karl Worner, he’s just come on leaps and bounds... He hasn’t wavered in his form this year. He’s tough, he’s very good in the air, and he’s very reliable at ground level as well. We all complement each other and it’s a group that plays really well together.”
Fremantle will go in unchanged against Greater Western Sydney in Canberra on Saturday, in a bid to keep a 14-game winning streak running.
The Giants made four changes, managing Phoenix Gothard and Leek Aleer while Max Gruzewski (knee) and Brent Daniels (calf) are injured. GWS academy product Riley Hamilton will make his debut.
GWS coach Adam Kingsley expects no one to give his struggling side a chance against top-of-the-table Dockers but says that creates the perfect opportunity for them.
“No one will give us a chance to beat them, and that creates an opportunity for us, and I’m sure our guys will attack accordingly,” Kingsley said.
“In all phases they are strong, but at our best we think we can beat anyone... I think our game stands up. It’s a finals brand when we execute it as well as we can.
“What better chance do we have in front of our home fans and against the best team in the competition at the moment?”
