Glendinning-Allan Medal: Murphy Reid snares first best-on-ground prize after derby domination

Murphy Reid has become the youngest player in Fremantle history to snare the Glendinning-Allan Medal.

The 19-year-old played a starring role in Freo’s 70-point western derby thrashing of West Coast, racking up 26 disposals, eight score involvements and adding a long-range goal.

It earned him eight of the maximum nine votes from the three medal judges, and saw him become the first-ever teenager to win the prize.

It was an early birthday present for the 19-year-old, who turns 20 next week and was appearing in just his fourth derby clash.

Only West Coast’s Ashley Sampi was younger as a best-on-ground derby winner. Sampi was in 2023 awarded a retrospective medal for his efforts in the first derby of 2003, when the judges’ voting was controversially overruled by Ross Glendinning.

Reid beat out Dockers teammates Matt Johnson - who had 29 touches and seven clearances - and Jye Amiss, who booted five goals in a derby for the second time this year.

“I thought Jye was going to win the medal, so I was a little bit surprised,” Reid said on Seven.

“He’s kicked five in both derbies this year.”

Reid said he tried to keep things simple and paid tribute to his teammates for backing him in.

“I just try and kick the ball well and not waste it,” he said.

“I work on that a lot at training.

“I’m very lucky that I’ve got players and blokes who encourage me to play confident and do my thing.”

Reid’s ability to perform in big games or in key moments has been a feature of his young career.

He has now polled votes in three of his four derbies.

Coach Justin Longmuir said his class is obvious.

“Clearly when he gets the ball in his hands, something special usually happens,” he said.

“I thought his work rate was strong. You can’t teach some players the stuff he does with his vision and his ability to weight kicks and do what the game needs.”
