Fremantle star Luke Jackson’s ability to “tear apart a game” has Gold Coast on high alert as the Dockers chase finals revenge at Optus Stadium on Sunday.
Jackson further solidified himself as one of the in-form players in the competition with a dominant performance against Geelong on Thursday, notching up an incredible 28 disposals, two goals, nine tackles, 25 hitouts and six clearances.
It earned him another 10 votes from the coaches this week, catapulting him back to third in the race for the Champion Player award behind only Collingwood tyro Nick Daicos and Western Bulldogs champion Marcus Bontempelli, who has played one extra game.
Suns vice-captain Touk Miller said Jackson will factor heavily into their plans to combat the Dockers on their home deck.
“I’m not too sure exactly what we’re going to do with him yet. I’m sure he’s going to have some sort of attention just given the nature of what he can do,” he said.
“There’s not too many blokes that are that height that can cover the ground like he can and and tear apart a game. But look, I’m sure we’ll have something to to rectify that.”
The Dockers got redemption against the Cats, the only team to beat them this season back in round one, in a nine-point victory on Thursday night.
But after being knocked out in a one-point thriller by the Suns in the elimination final at Optus Stadium last season, revenge this week would be even sweeter.
Despite losing their past four games, Miller says the team will use that September win as evidence they can end Fremantle’s 13-game winning streak.
“They’re in really good form but we’re full of confidence still,” Miller said.
“We’re not showing it in the win-loss column at the moment, but... we’re doing a lot right. Last time we played them there, we won. So we can only take confidence in that.
“We feel like that our game plan is starting to stack up so hopefully it can turn into a win this weekend.
“We feel like our engine rooms are as good as anyone on the comp and it’s on us and on our shoulders to take responsibility of that and make a difference.
“I think for us, we’re in a good position. We’ve got two really strong ruckman. We’ve obviously got a really good midfield crew who are smart and I think that we’re we’re going to be able to figure it out.”
The Suns will have to make the long trip to Perth without star defender Daniel Rioli, who suffered a broken jaw in the 16-point loss to Hawthorn on Friday night.
Rioli is likely to miss more than a month, while Hawks star Josh Weddle received a three-match ban for the bump.
“Daniel’s a quality player and he’s probably a hard person to replace. Not many people have the speed and ability that he has,” Miller said.
“But I think for us, we’ve got some players that can definitely do the job. So we’re just happy that he’s had surgery and he’s recovering well, he’s in a good spot, so hopefully we’ll get him towards the back end of the season.”
