Jason Day is heading into his 16th year on the US PGA Tour looking to regain confidence in his game and the way his body holds up to the rigours of tournament play.

At age 34, the former world No.1 is coming off another tough, injury-dogged year which has sent his world ranking tumbling to No.123.

It's been over three years since the last of his 12 tour wins.

The Queenslander still talks optimistically about getting back to that No.1 spot, but his words are tempered with qualifiers about overcoming the persistent back problems that have restricted him.

Day is teeing it up this week at The American Express tournament in La Quinta, California, after an off-season of remedial work and adapting his swing with coach Chris Como to lessen back stress.

"The last two years, I've been struggling to get through four rounds so it feels good to have where the body is right now and slowly building up on that," said Day.

"It's difficult because when you show up with an injury, it obviously bleeds into your game.

"Overall I feel good about my body so I'm just looking for some confidence back into my game. And some results from there and getting things going.

"Getting back to winning. That's the biggest thing.

"At the end of the day, all I want to do is win and hopefully ascend back to No.1 in the world.

"I'm just trying to get some small wins here and there and hopefully those small wins turn into a big picture and turn into one win which then turn into multiples."
