Never Ending deserves favouritism (and perhaps more) for world’s richest harness race

Star four-year-old pacer Never Ending has quickly surged to the top of betting for Menangle’s $2.1 million TAB Eureka on September 7 and gets another chance to enhance his reputation as one of WA’s best horses in recent seasons. Given the conditions of this Friday’s race being drawn on earnings from horse’s last five starts, Never Ending had to draw gate nine (the outside barrier) in the field of 10. With Gloucester Park’s 804.5m circumference and renowned as a notoriously difficult track to win from wide barriers, Never Ending will face his hardest task so far in a campaign that has not been easy. The brilliant son of Sweet Lou sprinted from a near-impossible position to win first-up over 2536m, then substantiated his versatility by moving to the death-seat to win over 1730m last Friday. Trainer Justin Prentice has fostered Never Ending for the entirety of his career, and the connection between the two is so evident that the gelding shows a visible respect for the master trainer. While Never Ending is perhaps tolerating or accepting of the other humans in his normal life, it is to Prentice his devotion is owed. It’s partially why Prentice has proven such a worthy substitute in the cart for champion reinsman Gary Hall Jnr in both starts this preparation - they have a deep understanding of one another. “I thought if I had to drive him like that, it would be a good test for him to see where he’s at, maturity-wise with his racing,” Prentice said after last Friday’s win. “He settled in the breeze and steered really well. “Most horses will get in a bit when they’re going as quick as he was last start, and tonight to settle outside the leader - he’s only really been in the breeze once before and hung badly - it was really positive.” Never Ending is scheduled to have a race at Menangle as a the lead-up to the TAB Eureka, which Hall Jnr will be free to partner him for after receiving a two-week suspension reprieve last week. He’s currently the $3.40 TABtouch favourite for the feature, with Saturday’s Queensland Blacks A Fake Consolation winner Don Hugo surging to $6 second favouritism. The Art Major entire broke the track record rating 1:53.4 for 2680m, only for it to be broken less than three hours later by Leap To Fame, who has entered the conversation for Australia’s greatest ever pacer. Frankie Ferocious ($8) disappointed again in the 4yo Championship on the same night and was reported to have made respiratory noise throughout running. Petracca ($8) was again beaten after having his chance at Melton meaning that while questions marks develop over other leading contenders, Never Ending shows endless progression and arguably should be a shorter favourite for the world’s richest harness race.
