An equal-record three West Australians are heading to the FIFA World Cup after Perth products Alessandro Circati, Cameron Burgess and Jacob Italiano were named in Tony Popovic’s 26-man Socceroos squad.
The trio, all set to be part of their first World Cups, join a group headlined by veterans Mat Ryan and Mathew Leckie reaching an Australian record-equalling fourth World Cup.
There are no surprise inclusions in Popovic’s squad, with the most eye-raising selection — that of former Italian youth international Cristian Volpato — expected after his 11th-hour call-up to Australia’s extended training camp.
However, four years after he missed the previous World Cup in Qatar through injury, Scotland-based attacker Martin Boyle heads the list of four names cut.
Of the 30-man group who had gathered in North America ahead of the squad announcement, Boyle, goalkeeper Joe Gauci, forward Brandon Borrello and defender Kye Rowles were the one to miss out on selection.
Circati joins a group of Australian rising stars named for their World Cup debuts alongside wing-back Jordan Bos, centre-back Lucas Herrington and attackers Nestory Irankunda, Mo Toure and Volpato.
Volpato is not the only uncapped player in the squad, with forward Tete Yengi also included despite not being named on the bench against in their warm-up game against Mexico.
The inclusion of Circati, Burgess and Italiano equals the 2018 squad (which included Josh Risdon, Trent Sainsbury and Brad Jones) for most WA boys at a World Cup.
The three join the aforementioned trio, Stan Lazaridis (2006), Richard Garcia, Nikita Rukavytsya (both 2010) and Adam Taggart (2014) as West Australian to be named in a World Cup squad, and it comes after there were none in the 2022 side which reached the round of 16.
Parma centre-back Circati was one of the few certainties for the squad after an impressive full debut Serie A season, with the 22 year-old seen as a likely bedrock of the Socceroos defence for the next decade.
Burgess’ selection should also come as no surprise given the Swansea City centre-back has been an ever-present in Popovic’s squads and a reliable performer when picked.
And while Italiano’s rise is somewhat meteoric given he only debuted last October and has just four caps to his name, his steady form at right wing-back since his introduction and Australia’s lack of options at the position meant he was always likely to be in the squad.
There are five A-League Men players in the squad in the form of Leckie, qualification hero Aziz Behich, reserve goalkeeper Patrick Beach, rising midfielder Paul Okon-Engstler and Melbourne Victory forward Nishan Velupillay.
Behich, Milos Degenek and Jackson Irvine will feature at their third World Cup while Harry Souttar, Cam Devlin, Ajdin Hrustic, and Awer Mabil are each set for their second World Cup.
