Tyler Keitel has long been a match-winner for West Perth.

On Saturday, he was given the task of being a match-saver - and he didn’t disappoint.

Keitel, a two-time Bernie Naylor Medallist, kept his cool to kick the ball directly over the goal umpire’s hat from a 30m free kick set shot on a slight angle, helping salvage the result inside the final minute.

It left the premiership contenders locked at 9.11 (65) each for the WAFL’s first draw since 2012.

“I knew it was probably going to be our last chance, so I just went back stuck to my routine and luckily it went through,” Keitel said.

Earlier in the final term, teammate Aidan Lynch appeared to kick the sealer from a similar position, but Bulldogs captain Dylan Main replied instantly with an impressive banana on the run as a part of nine lead changes for the match.

Keitel now sits in the third position on the league’s leading goalkicker list with 27 goals, behind East Fremantle big man Jonathon Marsh (28 goals) and fellow Bernie Naylor medallist Ben Sokol (29 goals).

He’s overtaken teammate Keegan Knott by two goals, after the livewire small forward failed to hit the scoreboard.

Keitel insists he’s not too fazed about which of his teammates gets the end reward.

“We work as a whole unit down there so as long as we’re slotting them, it doesn’t really matter who it is that’s scoring,” he said.

“Some days you’ll get on the end of a few and some days you won’t, but it does feel weird to come away with a draw.”

For the Bulldogs, usual suspects Haiden Schloithe (24 disposals, 11 tackles and a goal), Tom Blenchndyen (29 touches and a goal) and Brandon Donaldson (21 disposals) kept busy, while the rest of the midfield did well to restrict Falcons star Aaron Black to just 15 possessions.

On a defensive note, Blake Schlensog showed why he could be worthy of a second stint at the AFL level with five contested marks, while Nick Suban looked dangerous as he drifted forward in what could be a more permanent move by Bulldogs coach Todd Curley towards the pointy end of the season.

South Fremantle have slipped to fourth as they head in for a week’s break, with a big game against Peel Thunder awaiting them on August 13.

Meanwhile, West Perth are gearing up for a mouth-watering top-of-the-table match-up against East Fremantle, in a fixture that could decide the rest of the premiership race.
