Although Mt Gipps Station, 40km north of Broken Hill, covers around 34,000ha these days, it is still a working sheep station. Stay where it all began in accommodation including three-bedroom Rasp’s Cottage (from $180 per night); shearer’s quarters ($35 per person), or a powered caravan site (from $35 per night). For those camping or caravanning, the Starview Primitive Campsite, 12km from Broken Hill, is set within the Living Desert State Park. There are 15 unpowered caravan sites, showers and toilets, a gas barbecue, and star-view chairs for sensational stargazing. The cost is $25 per night.
