Beyond the Saleyards: WA sheep market still in the doldrums

The WA market remains relatively flat. Sheep and lamb prices remain supported but buyers are yet to kick the market higher. Store lambs are well offered in November, but buyers are looking for lambs in the shorter term. On the east coast, dry conditions in south-west Victoria and into South Australia are still resulting in a lot of traditionally feeder lambs being sold as suckers. Mutton prices have been supported on the back of a shortage of lambs ready for processing. Goat prices have followed mutton prices higher, but still remain relatively dismal from a producer’s point of view. Cattle markets have kicked higher with supplies hard to find. Wet weather in some areas is also affecting the availability, and east coast processor prices have jumped 20-30¢ at some plants over the last week as a result.
