Sydney Sweeney: Euphoria bombshell shocks in ‘naked’ dress on Variety’s Power of Women red carpet

We’ve become used to seeing celebrities stalking the red carpet without pants, in sheer gowns and with skin baring cut-outs, but Sydney Sweeney’s latest jaw-dropping look has still managed to create waves.

In a polarising fashion choice, her nipples were clearly visible in a completely see-through silver chainmail-look ‘naked’ dress that was draped over her incredible curves and cinched in waist.

The Christian Cowan gown helped the bombshell steal the spotlight as she rocked up for Variety’s Power of Women event.

The 28-year-old was there to receive an award from fellow bombshell and Euphoria co-star Sharon Stone who defended her right to be “hot”.

“It’s okay to use what mama gave you. It’s really fine,” Stone told Variety.

“It’s hard to be hot, and I think we all know that. It’s really okay to use every bit of hotness you have — right here, right now — and go for whatever that is.

“Everybody has their own certain kind of hotness, their own certain thing, and you’re supposed to go for that. Because who are you not to be beautiful? You know, who you are isn’t an accident.”

Not everyone was as supportive of Sweeney’s choices. Some took to social media to express their dismay, calling her gown “vulgar”.

“So, you went to an empowering event for women with your nipples showing? And this is being applauded? WOW” one wrote.

Sweeney is well versed in coping with and courting controversy.

American fashion retailer American Eagle’s denim campaign featuring Sweeney, with the tagline, “Sydney Sweeney has great (American Eagle) jeans” sparked a eugenics debate — and pushed the company’s stock price up 10 per cent.

And she’s also dared to date Scooter Braun, one of the most hated men in music. Braun is the arch nemesis of Taylor Swift after selling her music catalogue and forcing her to re-record and release her old albums.

At the Variety event Sweeney said she knew what it was like to be underestimated.

She said she recognised herself in Christy Martin, a gay boxer who fought professionally between 1989 and 2011 and who she portrays in the biopic Christy due out next week.

“I know what it feels like to be underestimated, to have people define you before you’ve had a chance to define yourself. I know what it feels like to have to prove that you deserve to be here, to be seen, to be taken seriously.

“But every one of us has our own fight, and Christy reminds us all that strength doesn’t look loud sometimes, and sometimes it’s just about getting back up again and again, no matter who’s watching.”
