Garrison Restaurant and Bar review: Albany mainstay with brilliant views battles bewildering blunders

Whoever heralded Garrison Restaurant and Bar up on Mt Clarence as one of Albany’s best restaurants needs to be put in the stockade. Or perhaps a stint below deck in the Brig Amity replica docked down on Princess Royal Harbour would help clear their mind. Based on my family’s recent experience enduring a Monday service, Garrison is far from shipshape as a fine-diner despite setting sail almost a decade ago. Entering the building dwarfed by the neighbouring National Anzac Centre, first impressions were good — a roaring fire, warm welcome, fully stocked bar and aromas drifting out of the kitchen. There were four or five tables occupied on a Monday evening. They would soon double. There’s not much else open in Albany at the start of the week. Soon after plonking ourselves on a four-top near the fire, colouring-in arrived for the kids and a cocktail menu for the adults. Myra had to have the Mark McGowan, Garrison’s most popular cocktail — a tropical rum and vodka concoction served in a tiki mug. I’d have thought navy-strength gin in a no-nonsense negroni served in a short tumbler would be more fitting for our former premier. The wine list is worth exploring with three dozen by the glass, including loads of Great Southern producers. The extended drinks menu comes in a lever arch file with a helpful, quick reference guide. There’s also a good kids’ menu. Both ours got the big, tasty burger with chips for $16 each. The dynamic duo had devoured their burgers before we’d even ordered entrees. Garrison was lacking troops on this night. The venue manager was welcoming diners, running the bar and taking orders while training the only other staff member on the floor. Service was friendly and professional — the lone soldier was doing her best. The staff were not the only thing spread thin at Garrison. The bearnaise sauce accompanying my bavette steak and frites ($38) was smeared across the long, thin plate. Unsurprisingly, it quickly went cold. As did my enthusiasm. The Kidman bavette or flap steak, a cut adjacent and similar in flavour to flank, was marinated in bourbon espresso then cooked sous vide and supposed to be medium rare. The exterior was pleasingly blackened but the flesh inside was closer to well done. The steak was plonked on the chips, presumably to leave space for the long, artful smear. A pot of supposedly “luscious jus” was watery. I’d rather the bearnaise came in a jug so I could at least dip my chips. Disappointing, yet my main was a bearnaise cream dream compared with Myra’s lamb “cazadora” ($35). I put the dish in inverted commas because I’m still not sure what to call this lamb and veggie soup. In Spanish, cazadora means “huntress” (and sometimes “leather jacket”). On Garrison’s Instagram, this dish is labelled a “cadorenza”, which I’ve been told is Portuguese for “golden retriever”. Talk about lost in translation. The menu said: “Succulent slow cooked lamb, market vegetables, whipped goat’s cheese, fresh parsley served with a slice of chargrilled sourdough.” At no point was the fact that this was a stew mentioned. Even when Myra asked the waiter if she could swap the sourdough for their rosemary confit duck fat roasted potatoes (a side for $17), there was no explanation of how the lamb would be served. Since we dined, the menu has been updated to describe the dish as a “hunters casserole”. If this “cazadora” or “cadorenza” was supposed to be a Spanish stew, where were the beans, the paprika, the tomatoes . . . in fact, where was the lamb? There were a few chunks of slow-cooked lamb lurking among the veggies. You should be able to stand your spoon up in a proper stew. This was an insipid soup that would barely past muster at an autovia truck stop cafe. Venting my spleen over the steak and casserole means I’ve skipped entree. Not the worst idea. The Jerusalem artichokes ($24) should be a side not an entree. Either way, they were hard. As in, not cooked long enough, so the honey and truffle oil accompanying the almond dukkah didn’t soak into the root vegetable, which goes all sweet and nutty when roasted correctly. The beef empanadas were lovely little pastries let down by a watery, separated yasgua salsa (made from tomato, onion and chilli). Three of these for $25 was probably pushing things. The highlight of the dinner was probably the Brussels sprouts ($21) served with tasty speck in a creamy sauce laced with citrus and topped with parmesan. These rich, creamy veggies came out well before our mains. The final dish was dessert. Garrison has five, all decent-sized serves. We shared the tarte tatin ($20), partly because the menu told the story behind the French classic. Here it is, word for word: “The story goes that in the 1880s, the chef from the Hotel Tatin, Stephanie Tatin, accidentally neglected an apple pie that overcooked in butter and sugar. In order to salvage it, she put a crust over the top, baked it, and turned the result upside down. The result was a hit, and the tarte tatin was born!” After that, surely, they couldn’t stuff it up. At Garrison, they cooked the pastry on the bottom in a white-hot cast iron skillet, rendering the base a soggy mess. The final straw in a dinner riddled with errors. Some bewildering decisions and stretched staff. Good wine list and a lovely room. Could live up to its reputation as one of the Albany region’s best with recalibration — and a revised menu. 9/20
