Home track win as Graeme McSweeney and Peter Herbert claim title in Albany’s special 60 laps for 60 years race

Experienced Albany pair Graeme McSweeney and Peter Herbert claimed a thrilling win in the special 60 laps for 60 years team event to open their club’s anniversary celebrations in style. Albany Speedway Club is marking 60 years this season, with a bumper meeting on November 8 kickstarting a huge few months of celebrations. A unique teams-style event, combining a production sedan driver with a street stock competitor in their racing on the night, helped determine the champion team. Teams scored points in their individual heat races and then their respective finals. Shane Whild and Mick Hamon seemed on track to claim the title before Hamon disastrously crashed out of the production final. That opened the door for Herbert and McSweeney, as the latter finished third in the production final to claim enough points to take overall glory. The pairing of Herbert and McSweeney finished with 138 points, after Herbert finished fourth in the street stock final. Whild won the street stock final, but he and Hamon had to be content with second place, collecting 132 points as a team. Tyron Hall and Kye Blight were third on 128 points,with Blight winning the production sedan feature race to cap a strong night for the multiple State and national champion. WA street stock champion Jake Hoath and Broome star Jorj Park also endured some tough luck on the night but finished fourth on a countback with 124 points, edging out the team of Ben Norman and Josh Fraser. Ethan Cooper and Anthony King rounded out the top six in the event with 82 points. In the street stock final, Whild was a narrow winner over Kayne Dellar and Ben Norman, while Peter Herbert and Jason Oldfield rounded out the top five. Blight prevailed in a terrific production sedan final over Jorj Park and McSweeney, while Nuno Mendes and Dylan Park finished in the top five. The event attracted a strong calibre of drivers from around WA, including the likes of Hoath and Jorj Park from the top end of the State, multiple State and national champion Ron Belfield, and decorated sedan driver Oldfield.
