Wellbeing and promotion of staff volunteering at City of Albany applauded with LGIS and DFES awards

The City of Albany claimed a double win this month in earning two awards for its strong commitment to safety and community volunteering.
The Local Government Insurance Scheme bestowed the diligence in safety tier three silver certificate award while the Department of Fire and Emergency Services presented the volunteer employer recognition award.
The city scored an overall result of 78 per cent for the LGIS award, recognising the strong commitment to workplace health and safety and reflects years of effort to embed safety practices across the organisation.
Presented at the council’s March meeting, Albany’s chief executive Andrew Sharpe said the LGIS recognition was testament to the collective effort of staff across the organisation.
“This achievement reflects the strong safety culture we have built over time, with staff at all levels committed to ensuring a safe and supportive workplace,” he said.
“We’re proud of the progress made over the past four years and this award reinforces the importance of continuing to prioritise health and safety in everything we do.”
The VERA award was presented by DFES to the city on March 25, highlighting the city’s ongoing support to staff who volunteer with emergency services and are enabled to respond to incidents when needed.

Mayor Greg Stocks said the award emphasises the city’s deep connection to community and emergency response efforts.
“Our volunteers play a vital role in keeping our community safe, and we’re incredibly proud to support staff who step forward in times of need,” he said.
“This recognition reflects our commitment to being a flexible and supportive employer, ensuring our volunteers can answer the call when it matters most.”
