Derby’s Nicholson Oval will be closed from July 8 during a long-awaited lighting upgrade.
Kalamunda Electrics won the tender to install the new energy-efficient system at the sporting ground at the April Shire of Derby West Kimberley ordinary council meeting.
The upgrade comes after growing concern from local sporting clubs and the broader community over the declining performance of the existing system which has progressively deteriorated in recent years. It has restricted evening training sessions, competitions and community events.
The new lighting system is designed to meet contemporary sporting standards and improve reliability and performance.
The project forms part of the council’s commitment to improving community infrastructure and restoring the full functionality of one of Derby’s key sporting facilities.
For the safety of contractors, sporting clubs and members of the public, access to the oval will be restricted for the duration of the construction works with the oval expected to reopen in November.
Shire of Derby West Kimberley chief executive Tamara Clarkson said the long-awaited improvements would deliver long-term benefits for the community.
“We appreciate the community’s patience while these important works are carried out,” she said.
“The new lighting system will provide a safer, more reliable facility that can better support local sport, recreation and community activities for many years to come.”
The shire is urging the community to respect all signage, barriers and temporary closures in place throughout the duration of the project.
