Forest Grove and Bornup bushfire: Threat downgraded as blaze burns south of Margaret River

A bushfire watch and act has been issued for people living in an area of Forest Grove, less than 15 kilometres south of Margaret River.

Residents in the area between Robinson Road, Forest Grove Road, Bussell Highway and Sebbes Road have been instructed to stay alert and monitor their surroundings.

Emergency WA advised residents about 5.20pm to evacuate in a northerly direction on Bussell Highway if it is safe to do so, but the threat was downgraded to a watch and act at 6.47pm on Wednesday.

The blaze is stationary and contained, but not controlled.

FIrefighters are on the scene, although waterbombers have “been released” from the incident as they cannot operate after dark.

Bussell Highway between Calgardup and Sebbes Roads has been closed.

WHAT TO DO

  • Stay alert and monitor your surroundings.
  • Read through your plan and decide what you will do if the situation gets worse. If you do not have a plan, make one now on Emergency WA, or in the Emergency WA app.
  • Watch for signs of a bushfire, especially smoke and flames.
  • Close all doors and windows, and turn off evaporative air conditioners but keep water running through the system if possible.
  • If you have a respiratory condition and you have been affected by smoke you should contact your local doctor or call Health Direct on 1800 022 222.

If driving

  • Turn your headlights on and drive slowly.
  • Watch for emergency services personnel and follow their directions.
  • If you cannot see clearly, pull over, keep your headlights and hazard lights on, and wait until the smoke clears.

Residents in the area between Bussell Highway, Calgardup Road, Thompson Road, Redgate Road, Davis Road, Brooks Road, and Warner Glen Road have also been issued a bushfire advice alert, including parts of the Witchcliffe townsite, although there is no threat to livs and homes.

WHAT TO DO

  • The threat of the fire has reduced however you should take care in the area.
  • Stay alert for potential dangers such as smoke and fallen trees and power poles.
  • If you do not have a plan, make one now on Emergency WA, or in the Emergency WA app to stay safe in future emergencies.
  • Be aware of emergency services and other support personnel working in the area.
