Coronavirus crisis: New Aussie ad blitz zeroes in on freedom

VideoNew Zealand reported 104 new coronavirus infections on Saturday, including the first community case of the virus in the country's South Island in nearly a year, health officials said.

An advertising blitz by the Federal Government was launched on Sunday night in a bid to target the remaining Australians yet to come forward for a COVID-19 jab.

With Australia hot on the heels of countries such as England, in terms of its vaccination rate, it is now poised to become one of the most vaccinated nations in the world.

But with expectations that most States and Territories will hit the 85-90 per cent rate for those eligible, the new campaign hopes to reel in the remaining 10-15 per cent.

The “Spread Freedom” campaign aims to convince the unvaccinated that getting the jab will result in a return to greater freedoms.

And crucially for WA, which lags behind the other States, it will link vaccinations to maintaining freedoms.

More than 80 per cent of residents in NSW and the ACT are fully vaccinated, compared with more than 70 per cent in Victoria and Tasmania.

WA remains at less than 60 per cent.

Head of the vaccination taskforce, Lt-Gen. John Frewen, said he hoped the messaging would hammer home the correlation between getting the jab and getting back freedoms.

“The next phase of our communications campaign is really focused on that last 10-15 per cent of the nation who are yet to come forward and get vaccinated,” he said.

“It is designed to really highlight the close links between vaccination and either regaining those freedoms that we all want to enjoy, or protecting those freedoms in the States where we haven’t yet seen outbreaks.”

While WA is faced with few COVID restrictions, WA Premier Mark McGowan has stood firm on not re-assessing the border with other States until an 80 to 90 per cent vaccination rate is reached.
