Chris Barker: Grieving family targeted by scammers as GoFundMe fundraiser assists with funeral costs

The grieving family of a cyclist who died while riding across the country has been targeted by cruel online scammers as they try to make arrangements for his funeral. Friends and family are mourning the sudden death of Chris Barker after he was hit by a truck on Eyre Highway while tackling the Indian Pacific Wheel Ride last month. WA Police say Mr Barker, 62, was heading east near Madura when he was hit between 5.30am and 6am on March 21. He died at the scene, about 180km west of Eucla, near the WA border. His son Aiden Barker has now been forced to warn loved ones of Facebook scams asking for credit card details to watch a live stream of his father’s funeral. “There are scam pages that have links to a funeral that hasn’t even been organised . . . apparently there is a credit card payment,” he told The West Australian. “I don’t even want to look at them. “It’s a real downer on things, I feel sorry that these scams have taken the limelight away from people trying to finish the ride.” Multiple Facebook profiles created by scammers have been circulating online, containing links to the bogus live streams. One post says: “**Attention: Don’t Miss Out Watching. Funeral Service for Chris Barker Live, Everyone Please Share family and friends.” The scams come as the Barker family grapples with the charges laid against South Australian man Anil Sharma over Mr Barker’s death. “The (police) investigation is underway, we have only been told so much about the investigation and it’s made this time very difficult,” he said. “We feel that in the last week, we have had our hands behind our back just waiting . . . I’m not sure that things can get much harder.” Mr Sharma, 36, did not apply for bail when he fronted Perth Magistrates Court on March 23, charged with manslaughter after he allegedly hit Mr Barker with a truck. And on Thursday, major crash detectives slapped him with three more charges. He will appear in Stirling Gardens Magistrate Court later this month for the manslaughter charge alongside two counts of wilfully destroying evidence and one count of failing to stop and ensure assistance after the incident. Aiden and his siblings, Kieran and Jessica, are hoping to bring their Dad’s body home to South Australia once a coronial inquiry is complete. They have since created a GoFundMe page, which has so far raised more than $9100, to help with the financial burden of repatriation and funeral costs. “As we navigate this difficult time, we find ourselves in a position where we need to cover unforeseen financial costs that come with such a sudden loss,” the fundraiser page says. “We’re hoping to give Dad the send-off he deserves and celebrate his life with all who loved him.” Mr Barker said he is planning to scatter his father’s ashes in the Bay of Plenty in New Zealand, and he thanked the cycling community for their outpouring of support. “The support from the riding community has been amazing . . . it’s all been heartwarming.” Mr Barker had completed the Indian Pacific Wheel Ride across Australia five times. The solo, unsupported ride starts in Fremantle, goes across the Nullarbor to Adelaide before going through Melbourne, Canberra and ending at the steps of the Sydney Opera House. Mr Barker, who lived in Victor Harbor in South Australia, had covered more than 1300km since beginning his journey at South Mole lighthouse on March 16.
