Queensland police want to hear from "potential victims" of a former school teacher turned sports coach who was allegedly caught with child exploitation material.

Police say the man is a former teacher at a private school on the Sunshine Coast and currently works as a coach at a major water sports association.

Child protection detectives raided a home in the region on Saturday and seized a number of items.

The 40-year-old man was arrested and charged with possessing and distributing child exploitation material. He's due to face the Maroochydore Magistrates Court on May 5.

Police have appealed for "potential victims to come forward" and also want to hear from anyone who might know of anyone who may have been abused.
